Windber, PA

Windber, in southwestern Pennsylvania near Johnstown, was established as a coal mining town around 1900. Migrants from many countries in southern and eastern Europe settled in the community as miners and their cultural, religious, and political heritage is still apparent in the town today. Photos taken in 2002.

Hi Mile, even though I don't live there anymore, Windber will always be my home. Some great old fashioned values were taught then, but I guess progress says they don't matter any longer.

Every time I look at these comments of People that grew up in the Great town of Windber, I can feel their energy in their comments. Windber will always be Home to me and anyone else I feel that grew up there in their youth or are still living there. I see that the New Windber High School was officially opened, too bad some parts had to be torn down, but they say that is progress. Mike Z of 657 Railroad Street.

I'm researching my family history and know that my grandfather, John O'Leary worked/lived in Mine 30 around 1910-20s. I believe his parents were "Austrian" and possibly had the surname of Olear. My grandfather married a Catharine Spencer in 1916 and they had 3 children: John Warren, Catherine Ann, and my father Edward John born in Windber. Would anyone know where I can look for more information. I've reached a real brick wall and cannot find any more information than this.

Hi: Thanks for the most informative web-site. My grandfather, Paul J. Kebisek was killed in a rock fall accident in Mine 40, Scalp Level, Pa. on August 09, 1940. He lived at 1018- First Street, Mine 40, Scalp Level, Pa. With the help of a relative and others (Patricia Shaffer), I was able to photograph the house and his grave as well as obtaining newspaper articles about his death. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find someone that could point to the general vicinity of the surface entrance (portal) of Mine 40. I only found the powerhouse. I realize that the mine's surface entrance is now sealed-off, however, I would still like to photograph the general area as to where the mine's entrance was located. Is there anyone that can shed light on where the entrance of Mine 40 was located. Thank you.

I dont miss the old days. I love the new days where diversity is becoming common in Windber. Black men are having children with White women in Windber, black babies are around and its a great change. People of color are no longer ran out of Windber as though we would ruin the place, we are here and are here to stay. Obama's America is everywhere now, love it or hate it white people, WE are here to stay ! The new Windber is better !

My mother was born in 1909, named Noclina Lucchi, and batized at St. Anthony's in Wndber. She was nicknamed Goldie. She had oal black hair, and we never knew how she got the nick name Goldie. Her godmother was Marguerita Vespa. she married in 1925 and she and my father moved to Youngstowm, OH. Maybe your mother may have net her.

I remember hearing the Kush name so that is why I was thinking maybe you knew my dad. The Swerocks, John and Stella, also lived on Railroad. Stella was my father's sister. Mary Khula and also Helen Khula, both lived on Railroad St. They were married to my dad's brothers (killed in war). As a kid, I loved playing in the alley behind my Grandma's house. A long, long time ago, there was a little store down the alley where I went for candy and red pop.

Gabriel (Gabe) Khula was my dad. His mother, Catherine Khula, lived on Railroad St. I think the address was 615 Railroad St. I have many happy memories as a child visiting my grandmother and playing on Railroad St. My father married my mother, Elizabeth Stefan, in Windber. My father's brother Joe (Joseph) Khula lived on Graham Ave. Another brother, Andy Khula, lived in Michigan.

There has been no comment since October. Where are all the Windber persons? Happy New Year. It can not have been all that bad. My mother was born in Windber on August 19, 1909. She pased in 1989 before her 90th birthday. There was a Vespa some time back. Her godmother at the St. Anthony was Margerita Vespa. I got no response. Vespa did not show up again. My father came to Windber in 1913. His name was Frank Sainato. He married Goldie Lucchi in 1925, and moved to Youngstown, OH shortly thereafter. Does anybody have any info on them? Thanks

Can anyone tell me about the old mining area called Pot Ridge? I'm middle age now, but I remember in my wilder youth always laughing because someone repeatedly painted a picture of a marijuana leaf on the Pot Ridge sign that used to be near Babcock Ridge. It would disappear because it was repainted, only to reappear again. My brother & I were reminiscing, and I told him I bet the old sign is proudly displayed in someone's living room now! I just wondered about the history of the place. Any help will be appreciated!

Hi all. I had my happiest and saddest days in Windber. My Father was Edwin T. Fagan and he owned Fagan Plumbing and Heating. He was disabled with a severe back injury back in 1958, but got some training that helped him open up his plumbing company. I went to Rummel School then downtown and on to the HS. Anyone remember us?

My mom nee Anna Boor just celebrated her 100th birthday this past January. She was born at mine 42 in 1913 and lived there with her brothers Steve John Paul Sam Martin and her sister Elizabeth. Her parents were Elizabeth and Steve. She is able to tell me some things about her life at 42 she can even remember names of former neighbors. If anyone has any info on 42 at that time I would be interested in getting that history for my family. Thank You

It's wonderful to read all of the great stories. My mother was born in Windber in 1929 to Josef Ludwik (Ludwig)/Marcella Cybert. The last sister of 14 brothers and sisters was buried recently. Stella and Julie Waltos were aunts. Josef passed due to a coal mining accident and Marcella and the children relocated to Jackson, Michigan to support the family. Was searching for the church mom was baptized in (St John) and happen to find this site.

Kevin, I have checked out some info. on your Papinchak family. A great old family of the area. In 1940 Stephen Papinchak was age 30 years old living at 306 5th.St. He was a loader in the coal mines with only a 6th.grade education( as many had back then) and in 1939 he worked for 36 weeks and made $1400 dollars. His wife Victoria was only 30 years old and in their home they had 3 children Mary 11 yrs. Helen 9 yrs. and Anna was 4 yrs.old. It is hard to believe how they managed on such incomes, hard working miners and wives who knew how to stretch the money and put meals on the table for the family. Most of the men made that same amount, or less, of money that year. Hope this helps you add a little more to your family's history. We are always happy to help with Windber's history and families and hope to enlarge our genealogical files at the museum for future generations.

Hello all, I'm the grandson of Steven "Patcheye" Papinchak and Victoria Papinchak they lived at 306 5th St. they had 6 children Mary, Helen, Ann, Dorothy "Dodo" (my mom), Joann and Steven. My grandfather worked in #40, he passed away in 1977 at the age of 69 and my grandmother passed a few years ago at 98. I also have nothing but great memories of Windber. My uncle Steve still lives on 10th St. and my Aunt Joann lives off of 56. I remembr taking the bus to visit with my mother and brother in the 70's helping my Zed sell mill worms out of the garage in the alley, going to Cnjelkos, Eureka Store and Canachi's on Jefferson Ave. My Zed's brother Paul still lives there too he used to work at Alvin's Honda. My Zed took us to fish at Ogletown and Shawnee Lake and after we would stop either at Harrock's Sports, Slovak Club, Moose or Penguin Club those were the days. While if someone remembers my family and if you can find any information on my grandfather from the mines I would love to here about him my Zed was a great man. Thanks to all for your efforts in keeping the Windber memories alive.

Mine 35 was a coal patch town owned by the Berwind-White coal company. Eureka mine 35 was located on the east end of Windber, and slightly to the northeast. it was like a suburb of Windber. Go to the web site "Virtual Museum of Coal Mining in Western Pennsylvania" and you can look up Eureka Mine 40, on that specific page there is a topo map of Windber that shows the location of the Eureka mines, 32,35,36,37,40,41,42

The Mine 40 site is now all gone. It has been bulldozed into history, the only remaining structure is the old powerhouse, and that may not last long. The site had once been slated to be a tourist / historical site. But it was neglected and over the last 20 years was crumbling apart. All of the mine structures are completely gone, the main tipple, mine motor house , all the rails, the coal cars, the miners wash house, office building, the rotary car dumper, all removed and sold for scrap, and then plowed under. Mine 40 was an awesome historical coal mine location, a walk through the property was a walk through history. Too bad to see it all gone.

Great pictures. I've been gone 30 years now, but grew up in Windber. 1954-1980. I visit from time to time and see it as a much different place than when I lived there. Not better or worse, just different . It was a great place to grow up, and has gotten me many compliments on my job ethics through the years. All that I've learned was from that area and the people there that taught me right from wrong. The area made the United States great nation, now most people don't realize what the area contributed.

Leonard Sainato, mother "Goldie" Lucchi, born in Windber, PA 1909. She was baptist at St. Anthony with a Marugita Vespa as godmother, odfather was Valerio. Rennie Vespa visited this website in February 2011. He said he would visit each year. I asked if he had any relatives that might have known my moyher. He has never responded. She married in Jefferson County in April 1926. Then moved to Youngstown, OH. Her Uncle was Rosario Lucchi, and her father was Thomas. Her Uncle was killed in a mine accident the day before he was to take his daughter's trousseau to Italy for her marriage. It would be interesting to meet someone from Windber who might have some knowledge of her during her growing up period. Thanks

Betty ,my name is michael kus i lived at 35 for 20 years when i was a young boy ,my father would go to mine 42. we would visit the mehalco family ,they lived on top of the hill from the euraka store ,we spent many days at 42 mine my dad raised calf and he would sell them ,mr mehalco bought two calfs from us .i still go back to 35 and 42 thank you mike kush

My grandmother Wilda Shaffer (nee Blattenberger) and my grandfather Gerald Shaffer were both born in Windber in the 20s, they are 85 and 86 respectively. I had a wonderful time looking through yearbooks with my grandmother, and appreciate all the photos you have posted so I can see where they grew up. My grandfather went off to fight in World War II and they ended up in Cleveland, but they both have lovely memories of this place. It is, in fact, where they met, 80 years ago when they were six years old. Anyway, thanks for all the great info!

Went to the Facebook site at your suggestion and now check it daily. Read some horrible comments by some Barbie Doll teenager. She must have a horrible home life and should not blame the community. How many have left Windber only to return and show it off to our new spouse or find a familiar respite from the outside puzzle palace of daily lives. In career in the Air Force (now retired) visiting Windber was always a must on our return. After returning from Japan it was a long drive from the Left Coast to Pennsylvania, but a week "at home" was worth it. then had to drive back to a new assignment in Kansas.

Halverson, according to my records he died in Somerset, PA 8/20/1947. He only had one daughter (5 sons) I did not have her married name till now! Her name was Mae Andrea, she died in 1971. The family must have liked the names, my Greatgrandmother was Jeanette Andrea and my middle names are Mae Andrea. I also did not have the name of the cemetery where they were buried. I knew it was in Scalp Level but not the name of it. Thanks so much for the information!

These are great pictures and bring back many memories. I was born in Windber, but mom and dad moved to Michigan when i was very young. I still have Family in the area. I am a model railroader and am wondering if anyone has a picture of the actual mine entrance. I am modeling a mine scene and would like something reminiscent of MINE 40, my actual home town.

My mother was born in Windber on March 20,1902. Her father was Stephan Fecsko and mother was Mary Janosko as listed on her Baptism Certificate which was issued from the Greek Catholic Church of St Mary, Johnstown Pa. My mother immigrated to Jastrabie Slovakia around 2 years old and then married my father, John Lazor in 1926 also from Jastrabie. They then moved to Ardmore Alberta, Canada in 1927 and raised there family there. I am the youngest of 6 childred and since they have passed away many years ago I have little information on her family. Donna, I have checked for the census records of Soren & Karen M. Halverson, found none which is strange if they were in Windber at this time. found lots in Minn. with same names. Did find reference in the Connellsville and Union town area newspapers to a S.C. Halverson of Somerset Co., died at age 68, in 1947. He was affiliated with the coal industry for 50 years. He may be a son of Soren & Karen. He left a daughter Mrs. Paul Groff, Union town. If this your family. Located the burial place for Soren & Karen Halverson, they are buried in the Scalp Level Lutheran Cemetery.

I was going through some of my late mother's things and came across a small coin purse. On the inside of the flap, where it opens, it says 'Compliments of Anderson's, Dealer in Groceries & General Merchandise, East End, Windber, Pa. My great grandmother lived there for a while. One of her brother's was fairly high up in the mine office. Their parents, Soren (Samuel) Halvorson and Karen Malene Johannesdatter Halvorson emigrated from Norway. They both died in Windber in 1922 and I suppose they are buried there. Any comments/information greatly appreciated.

Ericka, sorry to say it will be very difficult to find someone who really knew your mother that long ago. But I do know this family as her mother, Mary Elizabeth Shaffer, was the sister of my husband's grandfather. I do have genealogy on this family and a few family pictures with the McFeeley family. Please let her know that Myron 'Hunce" Shaffer, the son of Irvin & Leila Shaffer is still living at age 94 and that Ruth Shaffer Hostetler, daughter of Harry & Edna Shaffer, also about the same age is living. Both are doing very well considering their age. I have met Jim McFeeley as he would often stay at the home of my in-laws when visiting Pa. they were Dean & Allegra Shaffer, I am sure she knew them.

Their other children were Olive, Gerald, Jim, Evelyn and Bob. Do any of you remember Gladys? She was born on Jan. 2, 1914 and has just turned 98. I'd love to be able to help her recall friends and places from her time in Windber, where she was so happy. Her father worked for Berwind White, but I don't know in which mine. Hello, My family is from Windber. They are the Yamber's. My dad, Paul, always took us back to Grandma's house as often as possible. I grew up with the most wonderful memories of Windber, the beauty of the area, and the kindness of everyone around. We had the most wonderful meals, and slept on incredible feather ticks. For me, even though I wasn't born there, Windber has always been home. I have a bit of family left in the area and wish I could get back there more often. Got home from Cape Cod, we displayed our Steeler flag on our car all over the cape, we won the Pats game while we were there lol loved it! Lots of folks still do not have power up that way in Conn. Tom - thank you for the kind comments about Ling's Cowbelle Shoppe. My uncle Bill and his wife Grace Ling owned that little establishment, and my sister and I spent many hours behind the counter. We went from making donuts, to selling sub sandwiches made in the window, to popcorn, candy and even cigarettes at 21 cents a pack. You may remember a small skinny kid with glasses who might have waited on you.

Anna Zahurak is my aunt. She still lives in the family home on Railroad street. She is the sister of my Father Michael Zabrucky who lived at 657 Railroad Street until His death in 1966.I currently live in Walkersville, Md..She is Awonderful Woman and Aunt. THE LEGEND OF THE FYOCK CHILDREN The story of the Fyock children is one that was a terrible tragedy. Samuel Fyock married his bride Mary “Polly” Lehman about 1859 and they began their family on his father’s farm on the road to Hillsboro. Their son John was born in 1861 and then Susan in 1863 who at the age of 6 years contacted scarlet fever and died a few weeks before the Christmas of 1869. By 1870 the children in the home were John, Amanda, Daniel, William, and Ida. On Dec. 27, 1880 Daniel died at the age of 6 years, followed on the 8th. of Jan.1881 by 3 year old William then 12 year old Amanda on the 15th. and on the 18th. 1 year old Ida. Diphtheria terrorized the Fyock home while each youngster was buried in the family’s burial ground near the house. For many years a family fable was told that each time one of the children was buried the dogs would lie on the porch of the farm house and howl all night long. Samuel Fyock, the father of these children died in 1893 at the age of 58 years followed by his only son, 38 year old John Fyock, the last surviving child; both are buried by the children in the Fyock Cemetery, shown in the photo above. Years later when the family dog would have a restless night it would scratch at the door to go outside, it would lie on the porch and begin to howl --- all night long.

October, the time for ghosts, and that means fun with spooky legends. The area surrounding Windber has its share of such stories; most have some indisputable facts before they get overstated.The Legend of the Midway Hotel Ghost A story is told of Martha Minnie Cerwinsky an 18 year old girl who was at the hotel at Midway and as she was watching the fireworks one of them exploded killing her on July 4, 1911. Since she was a pretty young lady with a mind of her own, especially in Windber’s frolicking time, she was not buried in her church cemetery but she was put in the ground of the Lutheran Cemetery in Scalp Level. Some say she comes back to haunt the town at the Midway Hotel.

I remember riding the big bob sled Vaneikens had down first street with as many as we could fit on it like 7 to 10 people. Tony and Eva Joseph would pour water in front of their house to make us go faster. We also use to make cars slow down and grab onto the back bumper and pull us up the street. You look back on those days and wonder how you could stand the cold but we were having to much fun to worry about it I guess.

I remember when we all gathered around the corner street lights, almost froze ourselves just to be with each other, and built igloos or went sled riding down Pritt's hill. I finally signed up for the museum news letter I've wanted to do that for awhile but some how kept forgetting to do so. Patricia Shaffer, in your last column you talked of the movie theaters. I always loved going to a matinee on Sat.. Getting closer to the theater we could smell the popcorn and peanuts aroma coming from the Cow Bell Snack Shop.In later high school years we would get our shoes shined at Buday's and take in the Cow Bell aroma as well. Hi Barbara, . My research shows that Albert Vaneiken's father was Howard Vaneiken and they were are 1121 2nd. St. Mine #40 about 1910-20's. You family was among the early mining families of the area. Also, just from memory, I do not have files handy, but Mildred Vaneiken was a Naugle so your family heritage goes back to Melchoir Seese who is one of the two Revolutionary War soldiers who settled in Paint Twp. I am the editor and always axious to have articles of the past to print in it, it is a great way of being in touch and learning what others remember of the "Old Days" when Windber kids grew up and going to the Arcadia and sitting up in peant heaven at Koughs old movie house was about as scary as we did.Send me your stories, we love them even if they are small, or large ,we are attempting to have a Heritage Room at the museum by next year where families will be in files so they are not forgotten forever, it does not matter how much you know we will continue to build on each family for future generations. Membership is only $5.00 per yr.if you wish to rec. the newsletter, money goes for printing, etc. and upkeep of the muesum-- we are not the Coal museum that is funded, we are the orignial Windber Area Museum on 15th. , all volunteers -- a labor of love for our town.

Hi Barbara, I am another Mine 40 child of the past, I remember the Vaneiken families, I lived on 3rd.St. across the alley from them. I remember Pansy Veneiken, our paper lady for many years. There will always be a bond with the folks that grew up there regardless of the time frame. I did a census survey awhile back and checked on the names of the people who lived there during the last census, being 1930, and the names pretty much stayed the same throughout the years so families really have a history in Mine #40.

For Sarah Hritz. I was in the class of 1955, the last class of Windber High School as the next year it became "Joint" High School. Might have been someone with that name in the lower classes, but not ours. Ironically we still have a bonding class and try to keep current with things and people. Windber was a tough town to be raised in, but in was an "equal oportunity misery indicator" as all of us were below the poverty level. Except those on the "HIll" of course. But it was a good town. It was a kind of commuity that felt it had the right to criticize and give you hell, but .let any outsider try it and they would band together in your defense.

Tom H. How long did your family live in Mine 40? You remember the Vaneikens,Onderko,Green,Smihal,Stevens and so many more. Do you remember poking at a wasp nest with a stick and we all said not to and it fell on you? Remember the teachers at Scalp Level School like Prosser,Williams,Fagan and others. The little candy store on the corner . How about the company store in 40 where all the miners had to shop because it was owned by the company that employed them. I can remember my dad cashing his check at the store,paying on the store book and only having several dollars left to take care of 11 kids. We didn't have anything fancy as far as clothes,car,appliances or toys and we ate a lot of beans,coffee soup,oatmeal,potato soup and home made bread but I wouldn't want it any other way. Families looked out for each other and helped one another by exchanging clothes that were to big or small for their kids and sometimes shared meals. There was no competition to see who had the best of everything. Years ago the Windber Park had rides and games run by the fire company I think and motorcycle races. You have a good memory on you there Mr. Snyder. Yes I remeber those mentioned as well. I was always facinated by the beer and soda man coming and dropping orders off to customers. I thought it was cool how the cases of beer and soda were strapped to the sides of the truck bed. I, like you remember hauling the coal off the tracks. It was my (one of many) job to keep the basement coal bin filled, as well as the shed in the back yard. I made a promise to myself that as long as I could afford it, there would never be a piece of coal in my house for heating. To this day I have thankfully been able to stay true to my promise. I had many chores that I was responsible for if I wanted to play sports. For me that was an easy trade off. Next time I'll tell you of my experience of the back cellar. I can remember walking to Scalp Level School and watching the miners bringing mine cars out of the mine loaded and dumping them and everyone would run because of all the coal dust blowing toward the path we walked on. We walked to school,home for lunch,back to school,and home again at the end of the day. I remember picking coal along the tracks behind 3rd street or at the rock dump. Yes I can recall building a fire in the bucket a day stove if you wanted any hot water to bath or wash clothes and other things. Back then almost everyone had a round or oblong galvanized tub and most kids bathed in them. Also most back cellers weren't dug out and you could earn a little money helping dig the dirt out. Do you recall the junk man coming around and the white horse pulling the wagon selling vegetables and how about the fellow selling towels,sheets,socks and ect. and also rolls of linoleum strapped to the roof of his car. Mr. Snyder, Are you out there? I think that this site needs a kick start, what do you think? Yu may be a little young Rich, but I can remember the day that the roads got paved and the picket fences came down in front of the properties. I can remember doing yard work for neighbors for the copper pipe that they had in their trash bins, and finally a bucket a day stove that didn't have any cracks in it and would function properly. That was a great day for me, for then after I learned how to solder, it brought me rightgt up there with the Windber guys who already had showers in their basements (cellars). I thought I was on top of the world when I installed our basement plumbing. How about wheelbarrowing ashes back to the rock dump in the spring? That was always worth a couple of bucks. Millions in those days. Just trying to keep the lines open, I have a million more stories that could be given to the interested. Patty, I'm more than sure that for the guys, employment was the biggest reason for moving from Windber. Probably marriage is the biggest reason for the girls. I don't think that leaving just to get away was much of a factor. I often thought that if the jobs were there that our children would also still be thers. Just one man's opinion though. It also appears that those who did have to move, especially as children, always recall the Windber Area with happiness; what a good thing to know. Perhaps a book of Childhood Memories in Windber, Pa. should be compiled so we appreciate and share those days with those not so fortunate.

Hi, I was born in Windber and lived in the old Russian Club on 10th St until my Mother died. We moved across the street and lived with my Father and sister. When he passed away I lived with my sister Mary Ann and her husband Boyd Shaffer. I went to elem. and jr. high until we moved to Johnstown. I have lived in Oewnsboro, KY for the past50+ years but still call Windber my hometown. I still have 1 uncle and several neices and nephews in the area and try and come up every year or so.

Mothers who helped to develop the Windber Area.:, Hannah Berkey was born on May 14, 1825 and lived about 3 miles from where Windber now stands in a brick home that her father, Daniel Berkey, built from bricks he made on his farm. On Sept. 4, 1846 Hannah married Peter Berkebile and they became the parents of 12 children, all raised near the Berkey Church Of The Brethren in a log house. Mr. Berkebile died in 1880 as he tried to haul some saw logs to his home. When Hannah Berkey Berkebile died her descendants, with her 12 children, consisted of 73 grandchildren and 65 great grandchildren.

She had to be preparing food all day long. I came from a small family of three children so I can hardly visualize what the cooking was like in your home, wonderful. I do recall walking home from school and as we passed each home the smell of what the family was having for dinner would be in the air. In the mining towns where all different ethnic foods were being cooked it was terrific. Too bad we did not even pay attention to it then..

Happy Mothers Day to all those readers who have grown up in the Windber area with the wonderful mothers that kept us on the right track of life. What wonderful memories they gave us. They sent us out the door to school each morning tidy and clean with instructions to listen to our teachers and to be good. They made sure we had a good hot meal for dinner and gave us instructions to get our chores done, we learned responsibility at an early age from a mother who loved us. We were not rich with " stuff" , but we had the wealth of a loving mother. Money can not buy what we inherited.

To Patricia Durst Shaffer. You found the correct Dora Yvonne Morgan. Our mother graduated from the Windber School of Nursing right after they moved the school out of the hospital basement to a building of its Own. Dora Yvonne was quite the bright student and was given a full scholarship to the Presbyterian School of Nursing in Pittsburgh. Our other sister, Fannie Lee, changed her name to Sandra (wonder why?) as she was the blunt of every Fannie joke ever written. Of course being the only male in the family in was my responsibility to pass the jokes on to her immediately. We always said that Dora Yvonne had the brains, Fannie Lee got all the beauty and whatever was left became me. - You may not be aware that the Windber Librarian, Susan Brandau is actively searching for people who once lived in Windber. she has a separate section for those who wish to contribute. If you have a moment, ask for my ring binder book called "The Writings of Raymond V. Morgan". It is an attempt to show that not only people whose names appear on sports plaques and trophies are important to a community. Thank you.

My brother Billy joined the US Marines, fought in Beirut, got medals, came home and was killed by a drunk driver on his way home from work riding his motorcycle in 1974. Angela, I checked the many Angleo Barone passenger lists and by a process of elimination the only one that could be your specific ancestor was a Angleo Barone, on Ship Re D Italia, Nov. 15, 1913, his home place is recorded here as Vittpriana. But let me say that most of the Angleo Barone's wives were of another name this one did have a wife name Sofa-- but the children born in Italy coming on this same ship are not what are on the census. They are Raja 19, Franejeo, 4, Felice, 3 and Antonio, 10 mos. The passenger lists are terrible to read, spelling terrible and most not legible.

Patricia thank you so much this is my family when I went on the census records for 1920 they listed a child as Harold but my mother had no brother with that name. But they did have twins Ida and Joseph I think the names are not correct. But they did move to Buffalo and lived on Trenton Ave. My grandfather had a brother his name was Croce my grandmothers maiden name was Di agostina. I was wondering if there would be any records that would have my grandfathers town in Italy he came from in Windber I tried to get his death certificate but in NYS I have to wait 50 years which would be in 2 more years. Also is their a way I would be able to obtain photographs of where my mother re sided? Thank you so much for this information and getting back to me so quickly .

Angie, on your search for the Barone Family>>> I found the following: On Jan. 6, 1920 Angelo Barone, age 39, miner, came to the U.S. in 1908 was an alien, born in Italy. Wife Josephine was age 24, came to the U.S. in 1914, alien, born in Italy. children in their home were, Harold, age 5; Grace, 3, Joseph & Guido, both ages 2 yrs. 6 mos.( they must have been twins). They were residing at 2211 Graham Ave., Windber, Pa. ( this is the area known as Little Italy, almost every family was from Italy and were somehow related since I did not have a maiden name for Josephine I would not know if her family was here). I searched the other records and then fund them in Buffalo City, Erie Co.,New York at 304 Trenton Ave. in 1930. Angelo Barone, 47, Josephine, 36, both from Italy, children Carlo, 15, Grace, 13, Ida, 12, Joseph, 12, Charles,8 all born in Pa.and the youngest Michael was age 5 born in N.Y. so the family left Windber in 1925. It is possible that Charles should read Carmela since that would be the age for her. Census records are terrible with spelling of names, etc. Hope this is your family, good luck on your search. A suggestion might be to know Josephine's family, they must have come to Windber to be with relatives, or some connections, before going to N.Y. where Angelo did not have work, an entire group of Italian people were listed with no occupation.

I have not been on this site for some time and was really happy to see the Mine #40 contacts as I grew up there too and as many have said we will always hold a special type of relationship with others who lived there. The Windber Area Museum has a quarterly newsletter send to members all over the country and in the next issue, July, there will be an article written by Allen Pruchnic who also grew up on 3rd.St. It is really fun reading as he tells about his childhood there, playing ball at the baseball field by "Shit Creek" & "Sulpher Creek" and he names many of his neighbors. If you are interested in getting the newsletter, that is all about the history of the Windber Area, just email me. We need everyone's support to keep it going. We are also looking for family histories to add to our new Heritage Room.

My father,Stephen Forgac was born in Windber 1908 #37 Mine. His parents were Andrew Forgac and Anna Forgac (Cmorey). I found that she died in 1923 and is buried in Sts Cyril and Methodius cemetary. I cannot find any info on Andrew

To the guest that responded to my post. I think Mine 40 was the greatest place to grow up because of all the fun everyone had. Remember playing hide and seek,kick the can,softball,football,sucker,and other games. Sure there were fights,name calling and so forth but in the end we were all still freinds. Thanks for the great site about Windber. I was raised in mine 40 on second street.My dads and mom were Lawrence and Catherine Snyder. I remember the cycle races at rec park and even have some pins that says admission to Windber Recreation Park. 50 mile national motorcycle race. It has a picture of a motorcycle in the middle. I also have a wooden nickle from Shaffer Drug Store and a box with a flag mailed to Bricker shoe store where Mimo's is. My dad worked for Berwind White and was on the school board. There were 11 children with 9 still living here and there. The time growing up around here was the best time of our lives with so many cherished memories. Windber will forever be my home.

Wow I never knew this site existed. I lived in mine #40 until graduating from Windber High School in 1963. I now live in Eastern PA about 60 miles due north of Philadelphia. I have lived here since my discharge from the U.S. Army in 1967. I can honestly say that growing up in mine 40 and going to WAHS was the greatest gift that a person could ask for. Poor, yes- hungry at times,yes. There is not a week that goes by that I'm not reminded of back home. I loved it there, although I really didn't know it at the time and abruptly left the are as many had done. Opertunities had to be made as there were few to be offered. I would like anyone from that area who may read this to know that I had more true friends back home to last me a life time. Windber area had the neatest kids of any place in the world. Also, after being to many places and countries that Windber and (Johnstown) has the best looking girls overall. Thank you to who ever started this site. Tom H.

Reynold (Rennie) Vespa. I lived at 2005 Jackson Ave (east) until I was 9 when we moved to Maryland. I still have family in Windber and will always have fond memories of the town and people, especially those on Jackson Ave. I went to the East End Elementary School thru the 4th grade. We moved in during the summer of 1956. Two of my teachers were Miss Gobel and Mrs Kern. I'm now retired and living in South Carolina. We return each year for our Vespa Reunion, and to visit the graves of many relatives in Richland and St Anthony's Cemeteries.

Seaman info. - To Harry in Va. , question of June 2010, who was looking for Seaman family info. I checked my East End Cem. survey records and found John Seaman, 1875-1928 & Mary Seaman, 1883 -1918.Also an Andrew Seaman 1899-1926 age 27 years, is buried in St. Mary's Cem. Hope this helps, I seem to be on this site alot and do not wish to take up more than my share but do want to help with Windber area questions when I can. Thanks Tom for permitting the forum . It is football time in Rambler Country. Do you remember the 1970 WAHS Football Team's first Mountain Conference in History? Last Saturday night the Ramblers sent a tough Central Cambria home with nothing to show for their efforts but a 6-0 defeat. The game was played in almost continual rain and the muddy field was in treacherous condition. A hard fought conflict was the highlight of the football season. At the end of the first quarter neither team had scored, early in the second period Don Ling took a Tony Slatcoff hand off and fought his way over the enemy goal line for the games only touch down. Dean Hoffman was stopped for the point after. The game was a stand- still until the fourth quarter when the Red Devils drove into the Rambler’s 10 yard line. Then the Ramblers got tough, dug in and held. The alert Rambler defense picked off 2 Central Cambria passes, two by Slatcoff and one by Ling. As the game ended it was Windber, 6 and Central Cambria 0. The Rambler’s 1970 Football Team, under Head Coach, Harold Price, brought Windber’s First Mountain Conference Title in History.

Looking for information on a John and Mary Enoch and daughter Wanda. Have information that John lived in Windber in 1918. At that time , for some reason, (maybe the death of her mother ) he asked Pastor Saas of St. Johns Church for help in admitting Wanda to St Mary's home in Cresson, PA. I have been unsuccesful in finding records from state of PA. John and Mary were from "Russian Poland" and came to Pa from Perry, NY. Peggy I checked the 1930 WPA cemetery records for St.Athonys, they are not listed. The 1918 WWI draft registration list Thomas Shubella, 621 RRSt., Windber, Polish, subject of Austria Hungary, born Dec.21, 1877, wife Stella. The 1930 census list the family at 602 RRSt. Thomas 52, Stella, 42, Alex,15,George,13,Frank, 12, August,9, Helen, 5 & Elizabeth, 4. Then in 1942 the WWII registration list Thomas as born i on Oct. 28, 1878 Austria, wife Mrs. Stella Shubella, Notice the birth dates differ. There is an Alex Shubella born Oct. 28, 1915 died 15 Aug.1993, Windber [Social Security records]and a Alex Shubella born Oct. 28, 1915 listed on the Public Records Vol.2 at 1931 Ave.2 Astoria, N.Y. I do not know what that record is but if it is a birth record for N.Y. that may be your clue to where they were before coming to Windber.

Jim, if you are looking for the East End Cemetery, the first one for Windber Borough, you need to get off the #56 Bypass at the Windber Stadium at the red light, go the the High School and make a right, go east until you see the Hardware Store, the cemetery is on the opposite side of the road. It is pretty much grown up again but it can be seen. At present there are some new homes built along the side road along the cemetery. If you have a name you are looking for I did a survey, many years ago, and can look for it for you. There is also a catholic cemetery above the old east end cemetery which was a non-denominational one before the churches established their individual burial grounds. I remember summers in Windber. My Uncle Frank Menarchick would drive us from NY w/my mom (his sister) Genevieve (a/k/a Jean). My Aunt Mary lived down the road (cousin Eddie Maruschock is still there). They were a family of 11 and all of the uncles/aunts are gone except for Uncle Frank's wife. Those were happy times. Next door to my grandmother lived a bunch of kids - Beckie and Belva were just 2 names I remember and up a hill was a candy store. We visited again (my mom, brother and me) after my father passed away and my Aunt Frances was still living at home w/Uncle Joe. Those really were the good old days.

I was born in Central city, but raised in Bon Air , conemaugh twp. cambria county. My granddad was killed in mine 30 , my grand mother remarried and died in 1937. She is buried in the old east end cemetery, located at the extreme east end of windber, the cemetery was in disrepair till about several years ago , when folks from the historical society cleaned it up. I would like to find my grand mothers grave site if anyone can give me an idea as to the exact location of the east end cemetery, I was in windber a while back looking but could not find it, any help would be appreciated, I come to the windber area a couple times a year and can keep looking. thanks, jim colbert, ohio

I just checked out the messages and realized that I put May 30 for the Memorial Day activities, the date is May 31st. hope to see many Windberites from around the country there. Watch the parade, see the unveiling of the veterans wall and come to Recreation Park at 5 p.m. to see everyone and dance to the oldies. We'll be having hot dogs, etc. like old times. Anyone who is planning a trip back home to Windber this summer, you may want to make it on May 30th. The Wall of Honor, erected by the veterans, with the names of the Killed In Action and Prisoners of War from the Windber Area will be unveiled for the first time, with a parade and that evening an Oldies Hop ( dance) will be at the Windber Recreation Park, sponsored by the Windber Area Museum, will begin at 5 p.m. Come to town and get to see more the people you haven't seen for awhile. Have some fun after the winter blues. Everyone is welcome, you do not need to dance, if you don't want to, come and visit.

Love the pictures and have to say, after 55 years of living/working in Michigan(following graduation from WHS in 1956), returned HOME in May, 2009. I and 3 sisters and 1 brother were born and raised in Mine 30. We are Windber Coal Kids like so many others! All of us attended Paint Borough School and graduated from WHS. My one MAJOR regret is that my church, St. Mary's Hungarian Roman Catholic Church, formerly located on Somerset Avenue @ 7th Street, had been torn down. My grandfather helped in the building of that church in 1907 and in my opinion and many others, it should have remained an "historical" land site. Will be anxious to visit this site periodically to view further updates. MANY THANKS, TOM!

Hello to all those with Windber Pride. I have not been on this site for sometime and was so happy to see so much activity on it. I am the editor of the Windber Historical Newsletter, sponsored by the Windber Area Museum, the first home on the land that is now Windber. Our quarterly newsletter is going out to many folks in other states, etc. with information about the town and its settlers, as well as those from Paint Twp. before Windber Borough was established. This may sound like a pitch for money and in one sense it is because we need as much support as we can get. Then newsletter is only $5.00 per yr. which pays for the printing and mailing but helps us to have contact and information to those who moved away. I place information in it that is of interest to all groups and ages. I have heard folks say they never knew about the historical info. before getting the newsletter. The Museum is self supporting with local members working on projects to bring in funds to keep it heated and preserve the old photos and WHS Class Books, along with Football memorability and the furniture keeping looking it like a time when Windber had a similar life. When you are home for a visit stop by the museum We invite anyone who is local to join us at the meetings. For those that have written from away we hope to hear from you. I can place an address section with names of those who wish to be in touch with each other, we can use the newsletter as a forum of " who they are and where they went. We are in the process of planning a Dance at Recreation Park this spring or summer, dates will be printed in our April newsletter. Also after seeing the great photos I think we may be able to print a 2011 calendar with people and places of our town. Let me know if this is something of interest, please, and if you wish to enter a photo. I have seen some of the your names, that I am familar with, when my two daughters, Diane ( now in Fla) and Patti Shaffer were going to WHS in the 1970's. Yes Windber is still a football and deer hunting region and yes families still know each other by name and say hello even if we do not know you. Yes, I have written to long but am excited and feel it is important to be in touch with everyone. My last request is to let you know that I am working, as a certified genealogist, with the Windber Vets. doing research on anyone who served in the military, any conflict. This summer there will be a black granite wall proudly placed in the Military Park with the names of those who were killed in action or missing in action. Windber Pride really shows when one reads the stories of the men who served in WWII, we had or have heroes in our town with almost 80 boys & men being killed and placed in prisons for years, It left unhappy town when they did not return. If you have a relative you wish to enter on the wall or someone to be placed in our records in the museum please feel free to contact me, if you are not sure, send the name and I will be happy to check for it. Do not let them be missed. And if you need info. on an ancestor I will be happy to check records for anyone.

Hello Windber! My grandparents (and father) emigrated to Windber from Scotland in 1909. Sadly my grandmother died within a year at age 29. I'd love to visit and find her grave but I don't know where it is in Windber (it would be a catholic cemetery). My grandad (who was a miner) returned to Scotland with my Dad. He had a medal he kept which had 'Germantown' stamped on it. Was there an area of Windber called that? It might be the clue I need! Many thanks and best wishes to you all.

I grew up in Windber and felt suffocated! (EVERYONE knew who you were and who your family was). But now that I am raising my own kids I appreciate the safety of Windber and wish I could offer it to them. I try to visit every few years. My kids have to visit Conjelko's and miss the little square pizzas a local baker used to make. I agree with Patrick Collins.......I MISS GOBBS too!

hello,This may be the most obscure letter anyone might have put in here in a while. I was in Windber many yrs ago when i was in my late teens with my friend who had a relative living on a rd. called coal mine number9 his last name was Farrentino.dont know the family name of whom we visited though.i am now 64 yrs of age. I have absolutely no idea as to why your town just popped into my head but i have a couple of questions if anyone is still there that remembers. We went to a dance hall or disco called "The Cage" does anyone remember it? and took a tour of the seldom seen coal mine,is that still there? We originally took the trip from N.Y. because my friend said there were girls we could hook up with {us guys will go to the ends of the earth to meet girls wont we}I would appreciate it if anyone remembers anything about what im talking about. Oh, One other thing-We went to what was the only dept. store in the town and it was open only a few days a week. What was the name of that store anyone know? I want in closing to thank ahead of time all who respond to this odd inquiry from so long ago. Thank you once again.

These are great pictures of Windber! How about some from the park, our bars and restaurants, churches, and of course WAHS! :) A little known fact for anyone who has never been to Windber is that the street lights spell out Windber!!

How wonderful to see these pictures. I am a Farbo and I still own the house on Hillside that we all grew up in. All my history and memories are in this town. Gotta get a pic of Rizzo's -my cousin Millie would be very please to see it on the web. How many out there remember Pat Farbo's taxidermy work or took Music Lessons from Joe? Two staples in town for more that 50 yesrs.. Oh Ziegler's is gone - for those of us around in the 70's - it was great watering hole!

Great, great pictures. My grandparents lived in Windber on Graham. Last name Manges. Late 50's to early 60's. I was raised in Arbutus Park in Richland Township. Now live in Philly. Does anybody remember when the motorcycles came in for the races in Recreational Park? Never forget the noise and crowds when they paraded down Main Street.

Wow! What a treat. The Slovak Club sign was great to see. Quite a few times my Dad and I would go there for a beer together. Excellent pictorial! How about some pics of Mine 35, and I second the Rizzo's suggestion. This little town will always be a part of me.

What great childhood memories ! My father would send me to Andersons Store with a dollar and oh the candy it would buy ! When we go back to visit I do the same for my kids . I hear Andersons closed ? We'll see you in Windber !

Great pictures ... My family is from Windber and it was really nice to find this gallery . You forgot a picture of Rizzo's ( best Italian food in the entire area ) and one of my favorite places everytime I go back to visit . Windber is a special place and these photographs are excellent .

How great to see these pictures. Havent been in 20 years but think about it often. My mother grew up in Windber so we spent so much time there over the years...summers, holidays, etc. with my Grandparents and the rest of the family. Where's the picture of Zigler's? :) House was at the end of the main street where the bridge for the rr tracks is at...coming from town, up the last drive on the right b4 the bridge..top of the hill.

Thank you for the pictures. I still call Windber home even though I live in Florida. I loved growing up there. You always knew that you were safe no matter where you were in town. You also were either related or knew everyone that lived there. I miss that oneness of Windber.

My fathers family lived in Windber. They were the Menarchicks (Mlynarczyk) from Poland. My father Frank, Uncle Joe & Grandfather Adam all work in the coal mine. I have not been there in a long time but remember playing on the coal piles behind my relatives houses. My grandparents lived next to the old school house:)

Windber and the memories, I enjoyed every picture because in my youth I was a part of almost every one. I was a Coal Miner ,I went to St Johns church regularly, I drank at the Slovak Club, shopped at Eureka, was arrested in the Police Dept, now I live in Florida and have for approx 20 years but Windber will always be HOME SWEET HOME!!! I LOVE that place! Who am I?

I am looking of any sign relating to my Grandmother's roots. Her last name was KUZMINSKI and she was born (1911) in the Polish family in Windber. I will appresiate for all information! I am crying watching pictures - Windber is a part of my family's history............

The cemetaries on the hill are filled with the early Windber settlers from all of central Europe that built the region with their blood and sweat. Even though I grew up in nearby Hooversville, I knew many of them......... These great photos help keep the heritage alive.

You can almost see my childhood home on 9th street in the first picture. I moved to Windber in the 6th grade and graduated from their fine public school system in 1990. Really--I didn't know how good of an education I got until I later met the unfortunate attendees of California public schools. I'm dangerously educated in comparison. And I never got a chance to work for Bestform!

As a child, I lived on Cambria Ave. In the early 60's, Windber seemed to be a town for kids. We all came and went and our parents never needed to worry about us, as crime didn't exist. (Well they probably had to worry about all of our bike and skateboard injuries). Thanks for the images.

I was born and raised in Windber........I have lived in Mayrland for the past 20 years, but Windber will always be my home......I still have my mom and sister living there, so I get to go home often.....These pictures of Windber are so awesome...What a great job........And, let me tell you, to go on line and see home,....you have no idea how it feels, especially when you are feeling homesick.......So, thanks a lot, and a job well done.........Carol Hegedus........Boonsboro, Md
