Tortugas Pueblo is a small community on the outskirts of Las Cruces, New Mexico. The people of Tortugas are of mixed Native American and Mexican heritage. Their annual commemoration of Our Lady of Guadalupe includes a series of dances performed by residents of Tortugas as well as dancers from outside the community. The performances are a good example of syncretism -- combining the ideology and symbolism of two different religious traditions, Native American and Mexican Catholicism. The ceremonies, over three days, include a pilgrimage to the top of nearby Tortugas Mountain as well as the performances documented in these photos.
