Des Moines, Iowa

A very quiet place when we were there on Saturday. The downtown is almost completely financial and dead any period other than 9 to 5 weekdays.

I was pleased to see your #4 downtown building image. I used to work in the older building in the center, when it was the Des Moines Savings and Loan building, and again when it was the Midland Financial building.

I'm glad Des Moines is more active now than it was when we were there three years ago. I intended no slight on it's overall character, I could only go on what we saw on a Sunday and that was almost no activity in the central core, which is the only part we had time to spend wandering in. Many mid-sized cities are like this, including my own Salt Lake, which has/had very little to do downtown since mall and Walmart culture started keeping people in the burbs for shopping and dining.

These pics and the photograhper's comments do not give an accurate and current picture of downtown Des Moines. Des Moines is changing daily. A new arena and convention center is almost finished, a new library and science center will soon open and downtown housing is booming. Des Moines can rival and compete with any city it's size and many cities that are larger. No, it's not just all office buildings.
