Thoughtful / 28 May 05

"Battle is not a terrifying ordeal to be endured. It is a magnificent experience wherein all the elements that have made man superior to the beasts are present: courage, self-sacrifice, loyalty, help to others, devotion to duty."

General Patton

( thank you john for allowing me to take this portrait. I realized when I took John's picture that it was a challenge for me. I find it very easy to photograph a woman and her sensuality, but very difficult to express masculinity when I have a man as a model. It was very difficult for me to choose which picture to use today, but I think the one I choose was because it expressed more what I would expect of a male portrait.)

Yes, I would say this to be pretty powerful.

The hands support the heavy thoughts of this seriuos image.I love the grain and the biting barbwire type tattoo. The steel concentration. And the midnight cloak.Excellent!!! Voted :-)

the graininess and the tiredness in the eyes remind me of photojournalism type photos of working men resting when they can, knowing they have to return to the fray at any moment.... excellent, Susanne

I like this better than the other, though in the second shot, he does have a nice smile and looks very relaxed. There is something poignant, though, about this one even though the pose might be a little awkward. I agree with Chris. It's the eyes - tired and maybe even some pain there. Nicely done.

The tattoo is an obvious visual cue, but the tired eyes are what strikes me most in this portrait.

So hard to define what "masculinity" might be. All those things - courage, self-sacrifice, loyalty, help to others, devotion to duty - women have too. I think both these portraits are masculine in different ways. They're both certainly thought-provoking and well done.

I like the pose . The tattoo adds to his masculinity.

These are excellent, Susanne -- very thoughtful and moody. Very nice.

Pensive look, makes me wonder what he's thinking.
Very good portrait!
