These little Nuthatches are formidable when defending their nest. Just out of camera view is a Pine Squirrel that wants up the tree that the nest box is on. The Nuthatches hang outstretched like this from their claws and spread their wings then rock back and forth like a Cobra snake might do to intimidate an intruder. It works very well and the squirrels normally chicken out. Once the squirrel starts to retreat the Nuthatches will chase it around the tree and pluck fur out of the squirrels backside until well away from the nest. This action is incredibly fast and almost impossible to get on film, but I did the best I could at the time. **This is not a marketable photograph, nearly as sharply focused as I would like or a text book perfect shot in any sense of the word, but I thought it interesting enough to share with others. Plus it was funny to watch!
