Struggling with Tradition
by Helen Betts

Okinawa, Japan

This was taken at a filmed re-creation of Cmdr. Matthew Perry's visit to Shuri Castle in Naha during the days of the Ryukyu Kingdom (14th century-1879). These men were playing the part of Ryukyuan officials and were supposed to climb the stairs to the entrance of the castle in a dignified group. However, they all had a problem with their tight kimonos, which of course they don't wear in real life (something Japanese women understand quite well!). At first they seemed perplexed as to how to negotiate the stairs but finally hiked the kimonos up and proceeded on their way. The crew was panicking and had to halt filming until these guys could manage it gracefully -- don't know if the picture conveys it, but it was hysterical in person.

Hi Doris, yes they wear socks (called tabi) with these shoes (zori), as women do with kimono, making an already very uncomfortable getup far worse! I can easily understand why they were having such problems -- kimono are tight at the bottom, making even walking fast difficult, let alone climbing 400-year-old stairs. I've been known to hike up my kimono, regardless of how unladylike it looks, just to be able to make some forward progress! Helen
