Tiger Rattlesnake

Today I found out what a rattlesnake sounds like. It was in the grass just off the trail. Luckily I was walking on the other side of the path. I passed within four feet of it without seeing it. It started rattling right after I passed it. At first I thought it was a squirrel yelling at me but it didn't sound quite like a squirrel. So I started to investigate and realizing what it was I quickly decided to back off. I was about twelve feet away when I took this shot. I estimate it was 4 to 5 feet long. My understanding is they can strike up to half the length of their body. So I have to say I was very lucky today. Tomorrow the first thing I'm going to do is get myself a snake bite kit.

Hi Steve; I'm a homeopath and although I've never used a homeopathic remedy for a snake bite (we don't have snakes in New Zealand) I have used them for spider bites (White tailed spiders) and have had absolutely amazing results so you might want to talk to a homeopath about getting a remedy to put in that snake bite kit - I sure wouldn't want to have been bitten by this very intimidating guy! Excellent photo, too.

Wow! Great capture. I have never seen a rattlesnake in all my years of hiking. Thank goodness. Not sure I would be able to keep my hands steady to take the shot. Well done.

Wow, talk about steady under pressure. I don't think I would have been so brave, not even 12 feet away.

Great shot, all for the love of art.

Yikes...scray stuff. I couldn't have left either without taking a picture first...well done in a state of "I almost got bit by a rattle snake"

Wow, what a shot. Not only were you too close but he is in striking position as well. VERY lucky day today. Thanks for sharing.
