here is a view of what plasti-gauge looks like after installing and torqueing the #5 main cap; and removing the cap in order to 'measure' the plasti-gauge spread. I use inside and outside mikes to check dimensions of journals and bearings. But, I still like to "see" what the plasti-gauge shows me. Old habit, I guess; but I like to see the spread. And, it's kind of a final check for me: I'm not happy til I see the spread pattern.
The mains measured out to be 0.0015-0.0017in...right where I like 'em.
Also visible is the non-grooved lower shell, in place in the #5 main cap. #5 is also the thrust bearing; the thrust sides of the lower shell are visible. On the B21s and B23s, they always had the 360 degree thrust bearing at #5. The B230s in '85 went to a [IMO] mickey mouse two piece 180 degree thrust bearing located at #3 main bearing. The 360 thrust will handle the axial loads of a clutch pressure plate much better. In '88, Volvo returned to using the 360 thrust on the B230s: a wise choice.
And, yes, the plasti-gauge is removed from the bearing and crank journal surfaces before final lube and cap install.
