Family Notonectidae - Backswimmers

So-named for their habit of swimming inverted in the water, Backswimmers are fierce predators of smaller invertebrates in ponds, lakes and swamps. Two genera are commonly encountered: the large Notonecta and the more delicate Buenoa. Species of Buenoa are capable of hydrostatic balance, adjusting their buoyancy to maintain a certain depth in the water column.
