Hildesheim is a city in the north German region of Lower Saxony (Niedersachsen). It is about 25km southeast of Hannover.

The historical center of Hildesheim consisted of over 1900 half-timbered buildings up to WWII. During the war, 90% of the center was destroyed, only a few lanes in the southern center remained unchanged. After the war, it was rebuilt in a different style and concrete structures took the place of the destroyed buildings. In the late 70s, reconstruction of the historic centre began. The unattractive concrete buildings were torn down and replaced by replicas of the original buildings.
