In 1975 the national lifeboat service commissioned the first one of three units for service within the outer German Bight. These were constructed with the possibility of maritime mass casulties in mind. At 44 metres these ships were equipped with fire fighting and towage capabilities, and could hold up to 300 evacuees if necessary. Airlift operations were supported by a dedicated helo operations deck. Search operations could be supported by a small auxilliary boat stored in the stern section. At 185 tons the ship manned by six people could run up to 30 knots.
