"Look--this gallery was put together so that my friends and family could see what I was seeing and doing in Iraq. It was never meant to turn into a political forum. I have been in Iraq for a year now and have seen so many different things and have learned an incredible amount. What we (soldiers) are doing for the people of this country is so amazing and I am so proud to have done my part. This is an experience that I will never forget and will hold in my heart forever all the smiles and hugs and laughter I have seen, felt, and heard. Please respect what I have done and what all my fellow soldiers have done for these people--keep your shitty comments to yourself. You haven't been here so you don't know how it is. Enjoy the pics and thank you to all those who have supported us in our endevours. Air Assault!"

Please refrain from posting negative comments about the USA or the US armed forces. Many military families that visit this site may be harmed by your comments. I do review the comments occasionally and delete the negative ones, so why bother posting them?

I just want to say Thank you for serving and for taking the time to let us know what an American soldier goes through each day via your pictures. They say a picture is worth a thousand words...yours are worth volumes! I am a military mom, my daughter served in Army Reserves in Iraq in 2003-2004 and my son is now serving in the AirForce. I am very proud of them both and all their brothers and sisters in Arms. Thank you again to all our military families for all the sacrifices made each and every day. God Bless you all.

Debbie, thank you for sharing your photos. They show the life of a soldier - the good and the bad. Some of the photos made me cry, and all of them took my breath away. Thank you for granting the use of the photos to anyone. I have downloaded some of the photos to use in a powerpoint display in a church play that show the life of a soldier(and will list this website in the credits). Thank you for your service to this country. Because of you and others like you, those of us here in the U.S. enjoy freedom, liberty and peace. Thank you for putting your life on the line. My son and brother have written a tribute song called COMING HOME based on the inspiration of the incredible photos on this site and the blessed heroes of the 101. My brother is a veteran and also a doo wop star from the late 50's and my son is 24 and just signed with Universal London for several of his songs. They crossed the generations to write this tribute to you and we would love to share it with you and all the soldiers. Is there an email I can send it to. We were so inspired by the photos that we made a slide show with the music as a background. The song will be a big hit but only because it is inspired by all of you. As parents of a soldier Thank You from the bottom of our heart for these pictures, as we miss our son it gave us a small window to this other world. We made our son a CD for Christmas with alot of his pictures along with other soldier's pictures, with Toby Keith songs, he really liked it. I see alot of pictures I would like to now include in another one as a Tribute To Our Soldiers. Thank You! As we know alot of our Heroes have also died very young, as alot of people comment but I wish they too realize it was for them that they died. But also that our Heroes, reached some of the highest goals in life in their short lived lives, that alot of people though they would live to be 100 will never have reached! Please know we Love Our Heroes, carry them in our hearts, & pray daily for them. More importantly God Loves Them Dearly...God Is A Man of War. You all make us PROUD!!! God's Blessings!!!

There is one Screaming Eagle in particular who holds a special place in my heart........Shawn Baldwin - come home safe and soon honey!! Love the pictures. I know exactly how you feel! I was not in the Army, but I do know about the feel of commradery because I was in the Marine Corps. I was in Kuwait right before the start of the war and right after the start of the war. I grew so close to those guys, and they did to me as well. I am sitting here all comfy on my couch and I always revert my memories to the times I was in. I was an introvert before my 24/7 exposure to the same guys in Kuwait. Actually, I ran into you website because I am doing a presentation on posttraumatic stress disorder. And I am trying to keep aways from the PTSD that the military member suffer from. They are more than just someone to me, I don't have any children so I just call them my babies. All of them. I love those heros out there. I am proud of you and your buddies. Semper Fi! May all of you return home safely and may everyone respect your wishes to keep the political bullshit out of here!

Hi Debbie, a quick message from the UK to firstly say, great gallery of pics you have, and that I have great respect for what all of you are experiencing on duty. Keep up the good work! I am looking for a homesick soldier who would like to get mail and packages from someone other than family. I am retired Army (1974) and travel Space Available. I just got back from Germany and had the great honor of sharing a plane with a 101st medivac unit and their helicopters redeploying from Iraq. Such a fine group of young men. My seat mate, a WO Blackhawk pilot was returning from his 3rd deployment. How proud I am of you young folks.

Both of my daughters are Navy, one a communications officer for the SEALS, and one in the communications tower. My son-in-law is Marine. Not a day goes by that I don't pray everyone keeps safe. It seems strange looking at a female in a helmet, but I suppose, that's the way things go. I'm just an old Vietnam Vet 101st Airborne medic, humping with the grunts in the 2/502'd Inf. Was airborne in the States with the 82'd, then in Vietnam, we did all our assaults/movement in Hueys. Pictures are nice. They don't exactly convey the horror going on, but do show the day to day boredom and occasional good times. Don't know where Debbie is right now, but hope she makes it home alive. That's all we can do... have a buddy watch our six until we can catch that freedom bird home. Airborne!!

Love your pictures and love YOU for being you. I am a 72 year old granny, and since I was a child, in WWII, I have lost too many family members in warsm, inckuding my only brother, whom I worshiped. All of you are doing so much good, but PLEASE take cre of yourselves and ALL come home safely. Thanks so much for the fotos. We have one son in the 101st Airborne(AA) MEDEVAC. We are so proud of him. I know it is very hard on all the soldiers no matter the task. We also have another son in Iraq with the 4th ID. These soldiers are twins in aviation. They are doing what they always wanted to do. I pray many times every day for ALL the soldiers. God Bless Them. The fotos let us know just what they are doing at times. Their father and I are also Retiree and Veteran. We're here for all the soldiers!

I admire all of y'all so much for having to set aside your life and family to fight for a better life for the Iraqi people. My husband is also very proud of what the U.S. has done for the Iraqi people. He was there when the war first started and now he is back again. He said that he can see a dramatic difference in how the Iraqi people live. They are now able to provide food and money to their families and their children can now go to school. I can tell you from the bottom of my heart that I envy you, that I truly wish I was there and that everyone of you makes me really proud. As a civilian it is sometimes hard to understand the depth in which our soldiers must go to fulfill the dream of freedom. The media tends to depersonalize the stories and deeds of these brave men and women in uniform. I know more is happening then all the negative feedback we hear on the news. All of the men in my family has served or are currently serving in the 'Armed Service.' Since finding your site I have visited many times to view the pictures and read the comments. It brings everything and everyone and all that they do into perspective. I am so proud of all of you for continuing in the fight to help the Iraqis to gain their freedom. It is true that it is every mans fight for the "Right to liberty and pursuit of happiness." The American dream in the days of our forefathers was one of prosperity, freedom from oppression, and an independently run democracy. It�s all there in the constitution. Soldiers died fighting for this so that you and I could wake up everyday in a country that is free. It is hard to believe that there are places in our beautiful world that has never known what we often take for granted. God bless the United States of America, and God bless our troops! I found your site while looking for info on where my son will be headed this summer. He joined the Army last summer to fulfill his lifelong dream of working with helicopters. He is now trained to repair chinooks and hopes to fly them one day. In the meantime, he's suffering in Hawaii while he awaits his first tour in Iraq. We are so proud of him. I came to this site to get pics of soldiers in uniform. I am bulding a model of the V.N.satue Memorial model,exept as the modern desert ensemble.I have modified the weaapons and equipment using scap plastic parts, from the plastics factory I work. I actually was looking for decent pics of uniforms and equip. However, I was verry impressed with the quality and content.the pictures that moved me the most,were of couse the "soldiers crosses" I served in the Air Force with an honorable, but was denied reinlistment.After the W.T.C attack,I wanted to re-up, I would have been Army, but proud to serve at "peacetime" as an airman. A young 101st Airborne/Air Assault infantryman by the name of Kevin Wright, who never got to see his unborn daughter. Yeah, I was with 3rd Bat, 327th INF Delta Co 101st. I was there during the take down on Saddams two kids. In fact my truck was one of the ones that fired the T.O.W. missiles at the house. Unfortunately the credit went to the 502nd since we were attached to them. So, Im here to set the record straight. It was Delta Co 3rd Bat (Battle Force) 327 Infantry Regiment. And a few sqads from Charlie, and one from the Scouts HHC Battle Force. I here the guys are back in Iraq except the 506th. They wont leave til late this month. God Speed, fellas. Your Bro; Turtle.

My grandpa was one of the first mans to fight with the 101st airborne , he jumped in normandy in 1944 ,also in holland but he was killed in action in bastogne.Nice pics by the way.

Our son John just deployed to Iraq this Sept. for the second time, we're proud of him but also scared more this time than last time because we know more of what went on last time, although he has been promoted and now has a different job. He dosen't tell us much when he e-mails us other than he's OK and not to worry. Like that's going to happen. Do other parent/family members get the same reponse from their loved ones. I know he doesn't want us to worry but not knowing is worse than knowing someyhing.

My son has been stationed at Ft. Campbell in the 101st Airborne for the past year and is a crew chief on a blackhawk helicopter. Today he left for Iraq to help serve in the war. This is his first time serving in a war. He was stationed in South Korea when the company he is with now served their first tour of duty in Iraq at the beginning of the war. It was great to find your website this morning. It warmed my soul! My son is going to Northern Iraq (possibly Mosul) and it was great seeing pictures of that specific area. It was also nice to see the REAL support that is out there for our cause in this war. I love this country and I have no doubt that what our great men and women in the military are doing in Iraq is the right thing to do. I also have another son who is presently being trained as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force. I am so proud of my sons! and I am eternally grateful to all the men and women who have worn and now wear the military uniform of the United States of America! They are the true heros of the world! I came back to this site today, and am extremely appreciative of the efforts of the 101st Public Affairs Office. I first viewed this site 2 years ago after we lost Sgt. Evan Ashcraft. This past weekend we were in LA with his family, helping with the 2nd fundraiser for the Evan Ashcraft Foundation. While there, we learned of the loss of another soldier we knew, Jared D. You have shown me a deeper insight into what is happening over there, whereas all I see mostly is what is on the nightly news. I am Iranian and I LOVE the USA! I pray every day for the US Troops and for the Free Iraq. Every time I see this pictures of liberated Iraqi People tears come into my eyes. I'm so proud of the USA, the US Army and the Bush Administration. I would never feel save, without the USA. God bless the Good People of USA, Israel, Iraq, Afganistan and hopefully one day the Iran may be liberated, free and democratic aswell. Found your web page while doing a little research. Ironically I was in the 101st many moons ago. Another story, another time. The reason I'm doing research is because my good friend is headed back to Iraq for a second tour. He was there during the initial assaults and now it's time for him to return. This time he will be taking a digital camera and half a dozen memory sticks that I'm giving him. The plan is to set up a web page documenting his year in Iraq. The sights and views from a soldiers eyes. Similar to what you have done here. Hopefully if things work out like we plan he will fill a memory stick up and mail it to me where I will then set up a photo journal that his family and the families of his unit can see them and what they are doing. God bless and protect Debbie and all these soldiers, and give them victory in their mission. My daughter is also serving in the Mosul area right now. I wish I could be there, too. It is much easier to be the soldier than to be the soldier's mother or spouse. When I requested recall orders, I was told I was too old--so I serve in homeland defense as a volunteer firefighter/EMT in the DC metro area. It's the least I can do to back up what these brave young people are doing to defend our American way of life and western civilization. I am so very proud of them and thankful for them! m.

Just voted yesterday, it's hard to tell what the facts are over here most of the time. I think most people have good intentions no matter how they express things. It helps to see stuff like this, reminds me of photos I took while on a Med deployment aboard my sub years ago (USS Batfish), no one was shooting at us though :) Just remember, there are a lot of people over here that are proud of you guys and the job you're doing. Based on my experience I'd imagine most of you and the Iraqis are doing the same thing, trying to make things a little better each day. Good luck, are thoughts are with you. PS: Life's way to short.

The Gallery is Great. I just returned from Mosul, Iraq in April. I am with B Co. 877th Engr Bn (cbt hvy)and we were attached to the 101st-2/44 Hq in A O Glory. I was very impressed with the great respect we were given while we there. Even though we National Guard, most treated us as equals. If I ever have to be depolyed again, I hope I can hook up with the 101st. A bunch professionals and just good people. Thanks, Richard

Most of these are copywrited images by their photographers, private or military. My sister is in the public relations side and these pictures were given to her to show her friends and family what was going on with the 101st while she was there. I have fowarded messages to her from this site, but not from those with generic email accounts like hotmail or yahoo... I rarely check these messages so responses may not come soon.

I work for the 18th Airborne Corp in Fort Bragg, North Carolina and my job is to find pictures that we can make posters, flyers, etc. for incoming soldiers. We are particularly interested in knowing the rank, name, and complete unit of one of the soldiers in the picture named debbies4 022. Also, if we could use that particular picture in the Hall of Heroes. I just saw a Gallup poll released just today, that detailed that the US military was the most respected organization within the USA. A few knuckleheads do not begin to dent the hundred thousand plus heroes that are over there representing us. God bless all of you. Debbie, I really appreciate these pictures posted here on this website. I really commend everything that the soldiers are doing there in Iraq, no matter what political leaning I have toward the war (for purposes of relieving this board from political debate, I will not state what opinion I DO have on the war). I mean, all the things these troops have to go through as well as the things the individual soldiers strive to accomplish with the population in Iraq is quite possibly the most honorable and humanitarian thing that I've seen in my life.

The propagandist..i.e. media pressitutes want you to look bad, they want you to loose this war to suit their own agenda, just as they did in Vietnam. They are not getting their propaganda to sink in due to the internet and talk radio. Glenn Beck hosted rallies last year for Troop support and he's held one again in Houston, TX. Thank you for these wonderful photos of what it was and is like over there. It's a harsh reality, the world we live in, but it's soldiers like yourself that help to keep the freedoms we hold dear. I served in the 6th Cavalry Brigade from 92-96, and it makes my heart thrum with patriotism to see some of these pictures. My name is Joe Young. My nephew Sgt Ryan C Young died from injuries received when a roadside IED was detonated under his Bradley. Two of his close friends dies on scene, Ryan died a month later. He was U.S. Army with A company, 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry and I'm pretty sure they threw in with the 101st. At least that's how we used to track his whereabouts. He was injured on Nov. 8, 2003 near Fallujah, Iraq and died on Dec. 2, 2003. I looked through all of these pics hoping to find a picture of Ryan but did not. If anyone reads this who may have known Ryan or served with him there, please contact me via email at: jyoung375@comcast.net I've talked to people who have said that we should try to contact as many men as we can that served with him over there to see if we can get some insight on Ryan's last days on Earth before their memory goes away or they do. Look--this gallery was put together so that my friends and family could see what I was seeing and doing in Iraq. It was never meant to turn into a political forum. I have been in Iraq for a year now and have seen so many different things and have learned an incredible amount. What we (soldiers) are doing for the people of this country is so amazing and I am so proud to have done my part. This is an experience that I will never forget and will hold in my heart forever all the smiles and hugs and laughter I have seen, felt, and heard. I really enjoyed the pictures and wondered what your thoughts were, how you were feeling, maybe just coming off a long foot patrol. This song makes me feel the days, the tired, hungry, thirsty, foot hurting, the gnats/mosquitoes/chiggers and seeing a soldier fall and you go over to take some of his load and help him to his feets. Then move on to accomplish the mission. The song from my Drill Sgt. "Vietnam, late at night while your sleeping Charlie con comes acreeping around, Vietnam. You walk amought the die now, you see a friend or two, you wonder when the next one will be you, (hit it)!" I know it�s hard life to live as a soldier but someone has to do it. Otherwise, we could lose our freedom. Daughter is with 101st HHC Avn Regt. Recently; she shared her photos with us. I just so happy and blessed that she is coming home soon. Shiprock, NM is a small community of about 8,000. I find a lot of these Navajos Indians serving with the 101st from Shiprock. Almost, any one, I talk to have some one in the Armed Forces. I'm really proud to have relatives who served in World War 11 as Navajo Code Talkers. I'm proud to have served with 101st 1/327th Inf C. Co. 1972-79. Wife was with WAC in 1971-73 in Communications. Have a brother with 1st Cav. in Baghdad today. Another brother is getting really to deploy from Texas. We are honored to serve you, our country and Freedom to all. Even who are misguided and blind by hate or stupidity. Keep up the good work. Above the Rest!! Air Assault!!

It's Christmas Day, and as I type this, my husband is packing his Army gear, as he just got orders for an 18 month tour in Iraq. He is a "citizen soldier", so in the past few days he has had to notify his employer, contact his family, and I've taken time off work to spend with him and our 9 and 3 year old daughters. He has been in the military for 14 years, so this is not new, he's been gone before. My mind reeled for the first few days, and I was desperate to find something on the internet to comfort me. My girls and I were very blessed by these pictures - it made us feel a connection to the soldiers and comforted us to see the honest portrayal of day - to - day soldier activities. I was also a soldier, so I could relate to them on that deeper level, also. God bless you for sharing these - please ignore all the political volleyball in here and know that you are in the right place, doing the right thing. The faces of the little children made my daughters and me know this from the bottom of our hearts... Merry Christmas and HOOAH !!!!

Now..about all these people who say they support the troops, but not the war.....I say you are just giving "lip service" to the troops, and you are probably adding to American casualties. By bad-mouthing the war and our president,you are just adding incentive to those who fight AGAINST our troops. They see us as a divided front, and think that by increasing attacks on our troops, they will chase us out. They probably dance with glee everytime they hear those *%$&# Democrats bad mouth our president....and hope they get in office next, so we'll tuck tail and run. Just like the UN....BUch was totally right when he called them "irrelevent"....The UN certainly doesn't live up to it's responsibilities.... If it did, and if the world showed a united front against terrorists, maybe we could get rid of them! Why is it that anyone who stands up to them is the BAD GUY? Put it in this perspective: someone in your neighborhood is molesting and murdering his neighbors, and the cops come and violently take him down. Now all the neighbors no longer need to live in fear of this evil person... so why are they out there protesting the violence of the cops?? Why did they never protest the violence of the evil person?? No one lifted a finger to stop the evil-doer... What is WRONG with people?? Are they wearing blinders?? God bless our troops, my son included, who have the courage to stand up and do what's right, even when so many are trying to undermine their efforts. We are in this war, and I think we need to show total support to our troops AND their efforts. Give them the support they need to get this job done, and come home.

Bravo, some amazing images! Glad I decided to browse this gallery. Makes me wish even more that I'd had a camera with me in Vietnam back in 1967. Of course given a second chance and knowing what I know now, I probably would have been living in Canada for twenty-some years. I wonder how many of these guys will feel that way one day? Don't get me wrong, I'm behind these guys in what they do. I just hope our government/military has a better reason and plan than it did back then and, as one person said, that they aren't just working and dieing to profit Haliburton, or to get revenge for daddy-Bush and make 'W'look like a leader. Hello, these are impressive photos. I am currently an Army ROTC Cadet right off Fort Campbell, KY (Home of the 101st Airborne Division, 5th Special Forces Group, & the 160th SOAR). It is great to see photos from a soldier's point of view. The media tends to cover the "bad stories" more than the good events going on. Negative: Could use some editing/logicizing and photoshop/color correction. Positive: Photography never tells the truth - as do the media covering this conflict! However one person's documentation of this event (whether it be for military or personal documentation) personlizes the event and lets the civilian world into one persons' view of war. Gritty - GI life... I envy you for the ability to serve as a peace keeper and also having the ability to put your skill as a photographer to use. (Give Reuters a call when you get out of the military) The photos do require some editing and color correction/cropping, but bring all of us into this "world" for a brief period of time. By viewing these, one has to set aside all bias and feel the grief and determination not only of the allied troops, but the Iraqi civilians affected by this intervention. I am a photographer but not a "stars and bars" waving, kick their ass critic. However I am an American..... Thank you all for what you do for me, and allow me to speak for the cowards who criticize. Thanks from all who live without fear and enjoy the liberties granted to us.

I am not nor have I ever been in the service, but I wanted to say how proud I am to see how our forces behave, what they have to endure (including the BS from the top whips and the liberal media), and how grateful I am that you are doing so much for the rest of us. As an aspiring veterinarian, the shots of the 101 rescuing the dog really touched a nerve, and it speaks volumes of the character of those in the field. I want to say thank you, but feel that that is just not enough. May God bless each and every one of you, keep you safe, and bring you back home to your loved ones. Thanks for the pics and your service. The folks there are doing a tough job under tough conditions. I know what it's like...21 years in the military and two tours in Korea. To the whiners, the naysayers, and the idiots who bleat "War is not the answer", I say you are full of shit. War removed the Nazis. War beat back the North Koreans. War liberated Kuwait. War liberated Iraq. And because we were ready to go to war with the Soviet Union we never had to fight them, but beat them in the Cold War. Lastly, for those who oppose our effort in Iraq, I guess you'd prefer Saddam Hussein and his hellish spawn continuing to shove people into plastic shredders. Funny, I don't think there's been a single person shoved into a plastic shredder in Iraq since we took over. No mass executions. No gassing of Kurds. Outstanding photographs of our country's mission in Iraq and our interaction with that nation's people. It would really be nice to see this sort of imagery presented to us in the media. People such as Yamamoto should be ashamed that they must spew forth their vile opinions in such a mannner. Regardless of your position on our involvement in Irag, we are there and we are going to complete a job. That is restoring that nation to a place of respect and productivity in our modern world. Yes, coprporate tycoons and stock holders will benefit, but shouldn't you and I benefit in knowing that we led an effort to remove a bloodthirsty dictator and his cohorts from leadership of Irag. The totalitarian regime of Hussein was ruthless and despicable. There is absolute and proven truth of his antics. Is this not the same type of person that our country has time and time again helped dislodge from his evil roost. I say yes, I say make up your mind you left wing scumbags. Do we lead the planet? Do we act out of just and humanitarian beliefs, regardless of underlying meaning? Do we allow dictators openly and casually murder their own people because of faith or ethnicity? You answer those questions on your own. But just remember this, in our lifetime and probably many more lifetimes we will not see a unified and cooperative earth. It will never be, it won't be allowed by groups like Al-Qaida, and individuals such as Hussein, Castro, Pol Pot, Mussolini, Duvalier, Stalin and Hitler. These individuals are and were full of hate, and a desire for complete dominance. Think about those names, Yamamoto, and think about the atrocities that they committed, Then think about the world's opinion of those individuals. So don't give me any of this anti-Bush crap, it could have been any president. Quit being so freaking hateful, and support our government's efforts in restoring the once mighty nation of Irag, cradle of civilization. I am only 12 years old, but I am an AMERICAN and I have been told that even though we are only 4 1/2% of the worlds population that our companies are the MOST important in the world. If our companies need our soldiers, than our brave soldiers are willing to die for them. When I grow up I hope to be a soldier, and I might die for Haliburton, MCI, Exxon or Bechtel too. Great photos there and am glad you took the time to post them. I am a former soldier of the 101st Abn. I served with 2-502d Inf. for two years and am now a soldier in the Mich. Nat'l Guard. I was very much moved to see soldiers with the "Screaming Eagle" patch carrying out their duties in such tough circumstances. But I do know that they are carrying them out with the same selfless service that I witnessed when assigned to that unit. God Bless You. Scott

Thank you for posting these in a public gallery. My husband is in the Marine Corps, so I have a deep appreciation for all members of the US Armed Forces. Family and friends sit at home, wishing, hoping, worrying and wondering. We want to know what it's like over there. What does it look like? What does it feel like? What are the people like? What are they going through? But, when they return they're often at a loss for words and don't really feel like describing it anyway. These pictures just gave us an incredible insight to those things that can't be described. Thank you.

Thanks for postings the photos. They're great! It's hard to figure out the exact situation in Iraq from the heartland of the US. However, we all know that the people defending our country are the greatest on earth. We would be over-run with all kinds of barbarians if it weren't for those in the Armed Service putting their lives on the line. My guess is our men and women will be in harm's way for quite a few more years - if not in Iraq then somewhere else in this world. I hope they know that most Americans (90+%) really appreciate everything they are doing in Iraq. We all wish they could all some home tomorrow but it's just not realistic. If we don't stop them now we'll be fighting them in our parks, schools, and yes, coffee shops. God Bless!

Guys, I think that there seems to be a certain understanding gap here. 1.) It is possible to condemn the war in Iraq without condemning the soldiers themselves. 2.) It is possible to really really respect the soldiers while being strongly against the war & the Bush administration. Personally, I was very upset about the war because I did not want military personnel to die for Bush's shortsighted political goals. 3.) There is a big difference between me or you going down the street and rescuing a beating victim than there is one nation going to war against another. An international incident will have larger-scale repercussions than a gallant brawl in the street, and therefore requires considerably more forethought before embarking upon. This was a terrific gallery. Uh, to the military guys posting here...please don't hate me for disagreeing with the war? Please? I really really respect you guys.....

My parents sponsor an orphanage where I work as a nurse, and looking throught these pictures I see signs we're supposed to look for amongst the children. They're quiet and vengefull when they come in, some are shy to to point where they scream if you come near them. But the smiles and the willingness to have their picture taken, that says alot. It shows that they accept that there's a change, and they accept that it may be for the better in the long run. I think those of you who have decided that this war is brutal and cold should look more closely at the faces of the children, because they're all that matter in the long run. Sgt. Ross, If I were a U.S. soldier and my daughter was on duty in Iraq, no doubt I`d defend what she and American armed forces are doing. Do not think your words are indifferent to me, I give much thought to what you say. It`s complex. War, and violence, exists and has always existed, but human evolution has brought some of us to believe that it is not inevitable. The greatest proof of this (and the greatest gift of the United States to the rest of the world) is the U.N. Bush has torn apart his presidential predecessors most admirable invention. He has prostituted what was once the common and free voice of the world. I believe this war is different. Some ill-minded people would say the Balcan wars to defeat Milosevic in Serbia were necessary to build oilducts from the Caucasian region through Turkey to the West. If you`re pragmatic, the war was good to win Islamic support in Europe (most Bosnians and Kosovars are Muslim), and it`s not a good idea to have a fire burning in NATO`s East backyard. I think it was necessary. But we are talking about Clinton-era. Yes, Clinton lied to the people of the United States of America about what he did with his genitals...but I believe nothing more than a few million spermatozoids died. Yet the extent of Bush`s lies go far beyond this, accusing an evil dictator (a good friend of Reagan back in the 80`s, by the way) of having WMD, (something we will probably never know: ask Hans Blix, the Swedish U.N. guy who was in charge of investigating that) and then destroying a country and it`s people on that excuse. Liberating Kuwait was legal (according to U.N. regulations), just and very profitable. Saddam had a healthy relationship with the States until about 1991; the U.S. gave him weapons (artillery, armoured vehicles, who knows what else) to fight against "evil" Iran. The CIA had also helped Osama bin Laden by giving him "Stinger" missiles during the Soviet invasion of Afganistan. Years later, those same missiles reached Somalia and shot down a Black Hawk (American troops in Somalia truely did their best to help an extremely poor country that could give the U.S. no profit: this was a real humanitarian mission). In the Middle East, there are other two large nations that have been fighting for the right to auto-determination for decades: Kurdistan and Palestine. They`ll never get it because it`s not in the interests of the U.S.`s best allies in the region: Turkey and Israel. The Kurds have fought against Iraq and Turkey in a similar way as the Palestinians against Israel. Civilians on all sides have died. The Kurds actions in Turkey were called terrorism, and in Iraq resistance. Obviously, Palestinian actions in Israel are always called terrorism, whether the victims are Israeli civilians in Israel or Israeli soldiers in Gaza or the West Bank occupied territories. No one really cared when the Kurds were gassed by Saddam. In eastern Turkey the Kurds are still brutally opressed by the Turkish central government, think Bush is going to liberate them? For years, in the Middle East there have been two nations which repeatedly disobey U.N. regulations: Iraq and Israel. Iraq has been punished thoroughly. I wouldn`t dare imagine anything close to bombing Israel for two reasons: first because I don`t believe bombs are going make things better, just worse, in this case; and second because being against Israel is supposedly a subliminal form of anti-Semitism: that would make me a Nazi. Yet, I wouldn`t be surprised if Israeli prime ministre Ariel Sharon read Hitler`s book "Mein Kampf", and happened to agree with a lot of it. Sharon is showing the world how weak and evil Palestinian inferiority is. That`s what Hitler did with the Jews. Don`t forget Sharon has been accused of crimes against humanity for the massive killings of Shabra and Chatila (and what about Yenin, just last year?). But he was elected democratically, and he`ll probably be re-elected, just like Bush, no matter how many more innocent people have died on all sides and all countries since they ascended to power. I guess this is getting too long, and in any case my way of thinking (I know I`m not alone) is on the losing side, the way the world is going. And those of you who support power, just or evil, are the winners after all. Sgt. Ross, I sincerely hope your daughter comes home well, soon and after Iraq is a better place. Maybe I`m completely wrong, but don`t discard what I say just because I`m not an American soldier. I too have fought for what I believe. We can agree that War is a necessary evil, as you said; but War should be the last option. I don`t think that`s what is happening.

I do fully repect your nobility of defending your beliefs. What is it like on the streets of Iraq? Are the locals hostile or welcoming to your presence? They say news give you the full picture, I think they do everything BUT that. Do you agree that should US military presence in Arabia be less strong in the past decade, the current situation might be different? I do not consider Islam as pure evil. It is a mere religion. What went wrong is the interpretation of a small bunch of people. Wish you well, and soon a reunion of you and your family.

But nobody despises war more than the soldier that fights it. We are the ones that pay the Ultimate sacrifice in the hopes that one day our commitment and sacrifice will bear the fruits of Peace. Maybe if you had ever had the heart to fight for your beliefs you would understand these words. I have a daughter that I love dearly and have been separated from many times just as I am now. I pray every night that one day all my efforts and those of my fellow soldiers will bring her or her children peace on earth. I do not like or enjoy war but I understand that at times it is neccesary. Enjoy your couch and your comfortable life because without the soldier and his sacrifice even in your country you would never have had that priviledge. Honor and give respect to those that have died for your freedom and priviledge because they gave all so that you may have the opportunity to sit on your couch and critisze us. Regarding anti-war folks: I have a degree in International Relations from Rhodes...been to 27 US States and 4 foreign countries, most notably some months in Israel. Why don't I spew anti-war, anti-violence, and otiher misguided sentiments? Because I do understand wars and warriors. I've been a police officer in 2 states, currently here in TX. It's my calling, much different than that of a soldier, but an armed profession nonetheless. I don't weep for fallen firemen, cops, or soldiers, regardless of what 'side' they're fighting on from my perspective. In the big picture, war is an artifact of human existence, plain and simple. No amount of wellwishing, protest or activism could ever stop nations from sending men and women to die halfway around the planet. In the small "picture", men and women, from MY nation, MY friends, MY family, are fighting this fight. If they fall, then they fall as willing volunteers, members of one of the noblest professions ever created, doing what they are trained, expected, and paid to do. I don't wish that any of them die, but that's what happens in war. I am GLAD our nation sends people to fight against terrorism and radical religious violence. Many times, those who wish to kill or destroy you will only be stopped by one thing: overwhelming counter-violence. I understand that all too well, firsthand, as a cop. Folks who dispute that FACT of life need to pull their heads out of....um, the sand. Hate war for all its cruelty, beg to understand why so many must die, but understand that it WILL continue for all time, and that YOUR people are fighting and dying. Respect soldiers as warriors--and PICK A SIDE.

I must admit the pictures are great, mainly because they "feel" real, they haven`t been filtered by anyone except the photographer. The way the media treats war, it looks more like a movie than a crime against humanity. We are all used to seeing columns of tanks and soldiers on TV, while sitting in the living room. Sometimes tragic reality thousands of miles away becomes exciting entertainment and distraction, and watching it feels "right" thanks to questionable moral values like patriotism (the cause of too many wars) and mutilated ideas of honour and courage. I feel sorrow for all the American families torn apart, some just for long months (hopefully), others forever ... because of the vile interests of a small yet inmensely powerful group of men, the Bush Administration (and Allies: Blair, Berlusconi, Aznar). Young American men and women are dying everyday in Iraq, after they were taken to a land where they are hated and ordered to do what was necessary (war does not exist without atrocity) to bring Bush and Rumsfeld to greater glory. While American soldiers get the blame from the rest of the world and the bullets from the Iraqi resistance, Bush`s only worry is how the polls are going in the States. He doesn`t really care about people. George W. Bush escaped from having to go to Vietnam by joining the Texas National Guard. He`s a coward who commands an Army of faithful soldiers for his own interests, and those of his Administration. Bush has lied to the American people , and to the world. It is his fault that most people around the world shun Americans, even in Europe. What is worse, every single nation on Earth is afraid of the United States of America; preemptive war could fall upon any country, just invent the evidence and make war. It`s Adolf Hitler`s dream and George Orwell`s nightmare. Forgive my English, it`s my third language. I live in Spain; we had ruthless dictator Francisco Franco from 1939 to 1975, who rose to power after a bloody civil war. I`m glad no one bombed Spain in order to liberate us from this evil. It was the Spaniards themselves who brought democracy to Spain. War is not the way. Political and social revolution need a strong base of citizens convinced that things are wrong, not B-52s and Abrams tanks. I believe American soldiers in Iraq are trying to do their best to help. Yet they`ve been misled by ignorant and oil-greedy leaders. Maybe political and social revolution will be necessary within the U.S., time will tell.

TCP, I am sorry to respond to your last post on this gallery. This Gallery was intended to show pictures of one soldiers experiences in Iraq and not for any political gain or motivation. Perhaps you and others that have a problem with the US involvement in Iraq should look more closely at this gallery and see the pictures taken with the local population in Iraq or maybe read more than just the sensationalism the the media publishes and lets you hear about. Perhaps if the media would put some more effort into showing the good side of the US involvemnet in Iraq then maybe the soldier would not recieve such harsh critism. There is and always will be turmoil after any war, just as there will always be a long road to recovery and dissidents that believe in the old ways. Have you forgotten about all the mass graves of dead Iraqies and other ethinic people inside of Iraq that have been discovered. How about the mass use of of Chemical weapons that Sadam used on his own people. The news media will show you and tell you about the sensationalistic events in the world. Death and destruction sell not happiness. That is the world in which we live and one in which the American soldier fights to overcome. We do not blindly go to war for killing and oil we go because we believe in our hearts that in doing so we can make a change for the better. Maybe all of the Nations that do not back the US led Coalition in Iraq sitting comfortably in their living rooms or at their desks critisizing what we are trying to do to make Iraq a safer and better place free of tyrany should come and join us. You people seem to have all the great ideas and all the answers. Where were you when Sadam was killing innocent Iraqis by the hundreds and thousands. Proably sitting in the same couch preaching that somebody should do something. Right? To the owner of this gallery and to all those that support my brethren I am sorry to have turned this into a political forum. May Courage and Freedom shine across the world even upon those that would tarnish it's name.

Very nice pictures. They certainly give a good insight on what goes on between all the killing and suffering that war often carries with it. For all the people who bring politics to this GALLERY - don't you have something better to do? I like the fact that you (both the pro and anti-war posters) are politically active; a good trait of a good citizen. But if you don't like what is going on, then vote differently next time. If you did vote differently, and are now dissatisfied, then leave for the country where you'd be on the benefiting side of the vote, or start a revolution. Don't complain, act. "Judge a person by what s/he does, not what s/he says." I think we're all guilty of misjudgement. Hope you all enjoyed the pictures as much as I did though, and have a nice day.

For last two days on TV there was a program about brave and patriotic Tiger Force unit in Vietnam. They were also sent there to protect American freedom. Many of them are decorated, and are proud of what they did. USA should be proud of their ruthlessness with the enemy, too!

From a professional point of view, rather than a political or patriotic one. Good pictures, but they need editing. Pick 30 or so of the ones most representative or ones that grab you the most and condense for impact. Otherwise what you end up with the the "vacation picture syndrome" where no matter what the subject matter after about 50 of them you find yourself thinking "please, please, let this be over".

Have you not noticed that since we went on the offense, we haven't had another terrorist attack in our borders? Thats a pretty shallow and short sighted remark, Karen. Show a little respect. Not everyone in the military chose to be there, and this particular person decided to put a human face on what is going on. Seems to be pretty admirable and honest for someone to take the time to humanize the situation. Its pretty "immoral" and judgemental to demean an individual in spite of who they are and what their intentions may be.
