The City of Regensburg (Ratisbon)

Old town of Regensburg with Stadtamhof have been designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Regensburg location deep inside Germany, at the furthest northern bend of the Danube River, meant that it was not bombed during the Second World War. As a result, it has the best preserved medieval city core of any large city in Germany.

In the area of the old city was a Celtic settlement (Radasbona), which later became the site of a Roman stronghold and legionary camp, Castra Regina (founded AD 179). The capital of the dukes of Bavaria from 530, Regensburg was made a bishopric in 739 and shortly afterward became a capital of the Carolingians. The only free imperial city in the duchy of Bavaria from 1245, Regensburg was exceedingly prosperous in the 12th and 13th centuries. Located in Bavaria, this medieval town contains many buildings of exceptional quality that testify to its history as a trading centre and to its influence on the region as of the 9th century. It has preserved a notable number of historic structures spanning some two millennia, including ancient Roman, Romanesque and Gothic buildings. Regensburg's 11th - 13th century architecture, including the market, City Hall and Cathedral, still defines the character of the town marked by tall buildings, dark, narrow lanes, and strong fortifications. The buildings include medieval Patrician houses and towers, a large number of churches and monastic ensembles as well as the Old Bridge, which dates from the 12th century. The town is also remarkable for the vestiges that testify to its rich institutional and religious history as one of the centres of the Holy Roman Empire that turned to Protestantism.

Personally I have found in Regensburg quite unique and intense mood. It is very alive but at the same time friendly and relaxed place.
