Hello. I just bought a 68s targa. The seller bought it in 72 and raced it in riverside in 74. He had it flared by the same company that did IROC cars. Does anybody know which company that was?

I was over at ANDIAL in Costa Mesa not long ago while visiting Dieter and Pete. Dieter is amazing, at his age, he still participates in long runs with his road racing bike (bicycle), he’s in great shape! Best wishes!

Came across this site today. I do have an interesting picture. It is of Dieter Inzenhofer, later of Andial working on the engine out of the car. It may be one of the only pictures of an original IROC setup, clearly showing the high butterfly carburetion system. I also have found some others showing the correct roll cage, etc. etc. On the question about the color codes, I do not think their were any since all 15 were painted different colors and none matched what was available on any other cars that I am aware of at that time.

After this car was airborne end for end at Lagun Seca with John Bauer driving, how much of the original car is left ? Did it get a new tub, front clip, rear clip or roof clip when it was repaired ?

Hi Armando - I am in the process of selling Sports LTD which was my business (skiing) during my racing days and afterwards. When I get my pictures in order I will contact you again. I do not know who owns the car, but the last time I saw it at Santa Barbara it had become quite a rare item since it was basically the same as when it was delivered to Riverside for the race except for some body work. Those pictures of the 1974 IMSA race at Laguna Seca showed other IROC cars which in those pictures can be determined by the front spoiler like on my Head car. Peter Gregg (59) had made a different spoiler and his car was a new 1974 model. There was an engine difference in the original IROC RSR cars that ran during 1974 since the original IROC cars were delivered with an injection system that was changed for the 1974 models. The only way that we could get that one was to buy an entire engine. Frau Bare (spelling) who ran the race parts department for Porsche would not sell me one by itself. Since we could not afford the price of an entire engine we raced the 1974 season with the older setup. Every other original 1973 IROC RSR competitor bought the new engine and I think that all of them tore up the body work and turned the tranny upside down. I do not think there was a horsepower difference in the engines but there was a noticeable response time difference. During the 74 season it was very common to see 10 - 12 RSR's on the front of the grid, all almost alike and with fields of 50 - 70 cars it was a real testament to the superiority of the Porsche marque. I cannot remember all the interesting things that happened during those times, but there were a lot of them. One I do remember quite well - - -We copied Peter Greggs spoiler and had it on our car at Mid-Ohio. During practice we discovered that we could hear Peter Gregg talking to Jack Atkinson (his crew chief) but they could not hear us !!!. Jack told Peter that "Bergstrom" had one of "our" spoilers, We heard Peter say "That's O.K. since we will have a new one for the next race". After practice in talking to Peter he asked me about the spoiler and I told him that I was not happy with it and we were changing it for the next race - - - I wish I had a picture of the look on his face - - - Another one was during practice at Daytona where all the crew chiefs watch other teams very closely in the pits since it is so easy to do. Everybody was using fuel dump cans at the time. We filled ours up about 1/2 way and when I came in for refueling practice, Dieter Inzenhofer unloaded the fuel much quicker then any other teams had done - Driving out of the pits I noticed a lot of crew guys looking at their watches - - - There was a LOT of mental games being played and it was a ton of fun - - - - Later Bob

Hi - Are you still working on your history of the Porsche 911 RSR's. I bought one from the first IROC race in Riverside and you have a picture of it on your website. It was the strawberry colored car that was driven by David Pearson in the first race. He blew the tranny and it sat out for the rest of the event. Since it had the lowest miles. I bought the car and paid Roger Penske in a trailor and took delivery of the car and an extra transmission. That car was later on your webpage with the Head sponsor ship. We raced it extensively during the 74 season. I think that I do have a picture of two of the IROC cars sitting on the wooden frames that they were shipped on from Germany at LAX airport. If you are interested, let me know and I can look for them. My IROC was was totally restored and I saw it about 10 years ago at a car show in Santa Barbara. It was one of the very few original IROC cars that did not have extensive body work done to turn the tranny upside down which was in vogue at the time. Thanks, Bob
