The Sky's the Limit

Several years ago I was the preceptor for a nurse about to graduate. Everyone kept asking him what type of nursing he wanted to do, but he was not quite sure.
He was offered an internship to specialize in neonatal nursing and decided to give it a go.

He called me a couple months later and was so excited about his new career and loved working with those tiny babies,
but it was then that he told me what he really wanted to do was be a flight nurse and transport critically ill babies by helicopter to a higher level of care.

Months passed. One day when I opened my mail there was another freebie nursing magazine.
As I flipped through the pages of ads looking for nurses, there was a double page spread showing a helicopter with all the pilots and flight nurses... and to my delight.... there he was just as proud as could be.
Neonatal flight nurse! He had achieved his dream. He reached for the sky. The sky was the limit! He had attained his goal!

It all starts with a dream.

Through my tears as I read, I thought of watching my parents and husband die, my son who spend 3 weeks in the trauma unit from a motorcycle accident and a grandson who spent 2 weeks in the trauma unit from a fall from a pickup. The nurses were very special through all those events. Thank you for all you have done for patients in your long career.
