I used to live in Natchez for 11 years & im 15 now, & since i was a little kid i have loved it. I basically grew up there. When i go back i always go & its the most peaceful & beautiful places i have ever been to! I love the history, stories, & the statues of the cementery. (:

An odd description perhaps, but this is really a beautiful cemetary. The monuments are incredible, and reflect so much history and many personal stories. The markers for both the confederate and union soldiers are very moving and reminders of the terrible loss of life and great sadness so many families endured. Definitely worth a trip.

My family members are scattered through out this cemetery. It is a place I have always had a feeling a dread, but your photo essay gives me a new point of view. I will be comming home in March and will look at it through new eyes.

I've been to the Natchez City Cemetery many times and shot several feature stories there. But your photos make it seem as if I am seeing it for the first time. Great work.

As the retired Director of the Natchez City Cemetery I was pleased to see your wonderful sequence of very artistic photos of our historic and beautiful cemetery. Thank you. Watch for a book "Legends of the Natchez City Cemetery" that I hope to publish in 2007. Keep up the good work. Donald Estes ps. The photos of the Masonic marchers on The Avenue of Generals (main road) in front of the old Masonic Lot surprised me. I never saw them there.

Beautiful photos! I found your photos and site doing a google for the "Turning Angel" from Greg Iles book. It's the same as the one on the softback cover. My wife and I stayed at Monmouth Plantation during the summer, and I really hate that we missed the cemetery in Natchez. We will have to make another trip down this year.

the cemetery photos remind me how peaceful and eerie a place can ber. it can give you comfort or remind everyone that death is just around the corner. all your photographs speak volumes on how you feel or even care about the deep south. as a southern, we are taught to appericate beauty from a young age. whether we find it in ourselves or others or even places like these, the beauty of stillness warms our soul. the pictures of the turning angel are breathtaking as the cover of the Greg Iles's book. thank you for sharing your work and the history of natchez. i hope to visit natchez in the future. sincerely, emily e. smith

these are wonderful. It is odd some of the same statues are in the Elmwood. I guess it was a southern thing at the time and the people sold monuments all over the south. Very good portfolio on this cemetery.

Really enjoyed your images...have been to that cemetery, and it is one of the most interesting places I've ever seen. The age of the place is remarkable, and the back areas are quite spooky where the shubbery has taken over. Your photos remended me of many places that we had seen.
