Day 1: Sailing Newport Beach to Avalon
Cruising the channels of Newport Beach is like being in a candy store: What to pick, what to drop? Not many signs of an economic downturn here... well, maybe one: We see much more empty docks. They used to be studded by expensive yachts of all kinds. En-route mild winds and overcast accompanied us longer than anticipated. Instead of getting a suntan, we even put on our warm jackets. The biggest surprise came when we arrived in Avalon and paid our dues to the Harbor Master: Avalon Harbor was full! We were send out all way past Descanso Beach to the edge of the Hamilton Cove. With a somewhat rocking seas on the first day, we have had even some small doubt about using our Zodiac with 4 people in it. It was a long haul in either direction, partly in the darkness. But the sea settled and all the trips to and from Avalon Harbor proven to be uneventful. |
