Running Again After 26 Months of Being Absent

St. Charles and Napoleon

The St. Charles Avenue Streetcar Line began service on November 11, 2007 after being sorely missed since Katrina. Electrical repairs seemed to take forever as well as the tracks' repairs which were damaged by the floodwaters of the levee breaks.
For now the line will only run from the CBD to Napoleon Avenue and still crippling the students of Tulane and Loyola Universities' transit capabilities. Hopefully, by springtime the line will be complete all the way to Carrollton and Claiborne.
Hundreds of people turned out to welcome the streetcars back. The Warren Easton High School Band led the first cars down the tracks and well wishers waved flags and signs all along the route.
Streetcars have been a wonderful form of transportation in New Orleans since the early 1800's when they were pulled by mules.
The St. Charles Avenue streetcars are not airconditioned and passengers get to look out of open windows and enjoy the sway of the car while hearing the clickety, click of the wheels on the track.
They are known as STREETCARS, not trolleys or trams.

I think I rode that streetcar in Washington DC during the war as a little boy. It looks about the same.
