New Orleans After Hurricane Katrina

I HAVE WRITTEN A STORY UNDER ALMOST EVERY PHOTO.
A Category 5 hurricane named Katrina struck New Orleans on August 29, 2005 and peeled the face off a glorious City.
The City was hit by the tropical storm force winds and rain of Hurricane Rita 4 weeks later.
The flooding caused in eighty per cent of the City was not caused directly from rain in Hurricane Katrina but from breaks in canal floodwalls. Water poured in from Lake Pontchartrain which had been pushed in from the Gulf of Mexico. The cause of the breaks is due to poor maintenance and poor design by the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers and the local public governing bodies.
Even though mandatory evacuation had been ordered by the governor and the mayor of New Orleans, many failed to heed the urgent warnings and chose to stay. Many drowned because of this and thousands were rescued from attics and rooftops where they fled to avoid the water. It was an overwhelming catastrophe and rescue efforts were constant for days by local, state and federal teams.
The first 24 photos in this gallery are random photos taken on occasions when I was permitted into the City which is heavily guarded by military troops. Most of them are posted just as they came out of my camera as I do not have time to edit. My own home had a foot of water in it.
And, through September 26, 2005 I have posted the nicest photos that show little damage. More photos will follow in days to come.

Hello Everyone! Katrina contains to take her told. I took Mom home six weeks after the storm. She was very lucky that house made it up near Tulane. Unfortunately, the change in my mom and the people around her makes me so sad. Change is always hard but for people that have lived there for years, it especialy hard. Mom just recently had a stroke and there are too many cancers to list that they found. I have tried for a year to get mom to come to Colorado and still plan to but this stinks in about 50 different ways. I have now lived in Lafayette, Colorado for 23 years, but still consider New Orleans home. I couldn't believe the "Point" or the "Lakefront area where I grew up. My school friend's homes have been destroyed, seeing my high school made me sick, I can't believe how bad it is. I am so sorry for so many people that lost so much but it's really hard to keep you spirit up. Anway, New Orleans, is a tough Old Bitch and she will return. The heart is still there in the the French Quarter and the places coming back. Sorry for the pitty party but it especially makes me sad because of Mom and all the fun places we went. Will Mr. "B,s" ever reopen? Thanks for listening. Kely

Hurricane Katrina hurt a lot of people down in New Orleans. I was raised in Bayou Lacombe all of my life and I have not had the nerve to go home to see the damage it done to the little town. I left Louisiana 8 yrs ago. But it will always be home to me.

Coleen We haven't had time to do too much since the end of August. Sorry to hear that you had damage. Thanks for posting these photos. Paul has been depressed, he grew up in New Orleans, and seeing all of this has really hurt, Our youngest and his wife lost everything in their place in Henry (south of Erath) and another had substantial damage because of the water in Erath..... all from Rita. I think you are speaking of the Bruning house that was in Bucktown across the foot bridge from West End on a very smalll island. There is not a trace of it. So sad as it meant a lot to the family and was a landmark in Bucktown.

There was a house featured on HGTV last year - it is called or nick named "The Hurrican House" - because it has survived numerous hurricanes.
