First Day of School on New Campus

Holy Cross on Paris Avenue

The first day of the school year 2007-2008 found the boys on the grounds of their new campus on Paris Avenue two blocks from Filmore Avenue. The students from fifth through twelfth grades attend classes in portable classrooms raised several feet in the air (just in case another flood occurs).
The only familiar things to the boys from their beloved Old Campus are live oaks and the blue tables and benches that they brought with them.
It was 100 degrees in the shade when this photo was taken but the boys were quietly attending a class under the oaks.
The construction of the new permanent structure will begin shortly. Holy Cross had been in its other site since the mid 1800's.
My heart went out to these boys. Hardly anyone has returned to their homes in this area since the floodwaters after Katrina. In fact, this area looked more desolate to me than around the old campus.
To me this was utter despair because of the ties my family has to the old campus. However, to these boys it is an adventure and the anticipation of a new campus and school. I know that I, too, must see it this way or I will forever grieve for what was.

My son went to Holy Cross in the 1990's. There is so much sadness that the old campus will be gone-- the bookstore where boys would drop by to visit with the Brother and air their woes; the overcrowded library; the gym that appeared to once have a theatre stage; the band room where my son hung out and became band manager to be able to hang out; the computer room -- where my son developed skills that are serving today and where he and his friend Jonathan became the trusted minions of the computer teacher and were given the keys to lab. Peter and Jonathon also helped put the wires to set up the school's computer network. The Brother's Chapel with its wonderful stained glass windows. And the wonderful oaks that all former students will remember. And not to be forgotten the little trips to the levee, where the older boys (young men) could view the mighty river.

They will be talking about this time to their great grandchildren...I hope not all memories are bad ones.

Heard on the local news tonight that demolition has begun on some of the former housing projects. Re-construction is to begin on single family dwellings. The "new" New Orleans.

Bless them. Hopefully some heat relief is just around the corner.

Sorrowful story that you have chronicled in words and with your camera, Coleen. One can only hope that the situation will eventually improve.

Warm work for the lads and not a hat in sight.
