After more than a year of controversy regarding the "historical value" of this church, the wrecking ball will demolish it. Built in the 1960's (hardly historical) in the same architectural style as the New Orleans Rivergate (which was demolished to make room for a gambling casino) the architect who designed it had FEMA decide if it was historical.
The Archdiocese of New Orleans who owns the property had no intention of restoring this church after 8 feet of floodwater sat in it for three weeks following Katrina.
The Holy Cross School whose property near the Industrial Canal suffered millions, opted to buy this property on Paris Avenue in Gentilly for their new school. The entire negotiations were held up waiting for FEMA to make a decision.
The cross on top of the church says it all. However, the Cross will be placed on top of the Holy Cross School to remember.
