New Orleans' Shotgun Houses

Uptown New Orleans

After a few inquiries I thought I should explain.
The rooms in these houses flow in a straight line one into the other. It was said that if you fired a shotgun at the front door the bullet would exit the back door, thus the name "shotgun house."
The yellow one is a single shotgun and the one next to it is a double shotgun with two doors and two rows of rooms.
The shotgun houses of New Orleans can be very plain with just shutters and shutter doors or they can have gingerbread trim on them. They are unique in their coloring and it is considered an art to combine many colors in paint and trim. Most of the shotgun houses of New Orleans are built of cypress.

Beautiful shot. Actually I knew what a shotgun house is although I haven't heard the term in a while. Some of them can be quite large--many old southern mansions are "shotgun" houses.

Wonderful old places and they sure look nice with the colorful paint. Nice commentary Colleen.

Wonderfully picturesque but I suspect more fun to look at than to live in. Nice shot with those overhanging branches.

Thanks for the image, I always heard of the "Shotgun Houses" but never new what they were. New Orleans is a wonderful city, I would just like to go down and eat my way through it.

Have to sleep with one eye open in a shotgun house? Great story, you learn something new every day.

Much nicer than the tar paper covered ones I remember decades ago in Alabama.

Fabulous bright, colourful homes. Why are they called shotgun houses?

I love those houses. Open the front and back doors and the breeze just flows through! Great capture. Will be down there in less than a week! Have a great rest of the weekend, Coleen!
