The Everlasting Trees

New Orleans Botanical Garden in City Park

This archway of sweet olive trees was killed in the salty floodwaters following Hurricane Katrina. The trees were about 75 years old. Because they are still so sturdy and because funds and labor are lacking to remove and replace them it was decided to spray them white (for the Christmas lighting which begins next weekend). What happens to them in the future is unknown.
Thanks to all of you for your kind and caring words this week--it has been a long week. PBasers are the best!!

I hope these trees will remain, though that is doubtful. Outstanding capture. GMV

That was a great idea and at night, with lights, I'll bet they are lovely.

Katrina's work will be with us for a long time - imaginative use of the trees. Chris

Nice image, the resilient olive wood should last for a time, good idea for season.

The loss from the storm is more than we can easily imagine.
Things such as these olive trees slip beneath the radar of those of us looking from a distance.
This is a great shot, Coleen. Great reporting.

How sad that they died, but how good that they will be used for a joyful season.

Wow they look pretty amazing at this point. What a shame that they died in the flood waters, they really make such a glorious archway.
