Mother Loyola Weilbaecher, O. S. U.

National Shrine of Our Lady of Prompt Succor at Ursuline

When I first met her the nuns were called Mother so I shall refer to her as Mother Loyola. A New Orleans native, she was an Ursuline nun for 78 years and died on January 11 at the age of 97. She spent most of her teaching years at Ursuline in New Orleans educating girls in Latin, French, Math and Music. She expected the best from her students not only in their school subjects but in deportment and courtesy and service. Most of her students went on to college having earned their first two years of college credits in French while in her class. She was beloved by all who knew her.
Mother Loyola is interred in the Mausoleum on the grounds of Ursuline along with hundreds of Ursuline nuns, including the first 10 Ursulines who came to New Orleans from France in 1727 to begin a school.

I am sorry to hear of her passing. I remember her well. She was there for us when we went into the library. I remember her smile and kindness towards all the girls. May she rest in peace.

Dear Colleen; how I wish we had more nuns and sisters like Mother Loyola. May she find peace and eternal happiness with our Lord in our Lady. Al

A truly inspirational life of service and love for God and fellowman. Thank you for sharing Mother's story, Coleen. What a beautiful tribute and a beautiful church.

It seems that God had plans for her to keep her on this earth for 97 years. I wonder if she can see how inspirational she was to so many and that she is not forgotten to them even if she no longer with us. I also want to make a comment on this church. I find that is incredible impressive and I love its decorations. Churches are like castles. They give you feel for those whom entered them years ago, which does not get lost in modern times either.
