The remains of several hundred Ursuline nuns are interred here including the ten who came here in 1727 from France. Some of the nuns who were dearest to me, Mother Elizabeth Marie, Mother Colomba, Mother Pierre and Mother Loyola, are buried here. There was still a foot of water in the Mausoleum when I took this photo.
I have photos pre-Katrina of Ursuline in my gallery "My New Orleans."
Mother Colomba and Mother Michelle Fitzwilliam were there when I attended Ursuline in the '50s, although neither taught me. They did resemble each other. I think they had another sister who lived at one time at the Notre Dame Home across the street from College Inn.

Mother Columba (Jane Marguerite Fitzwilliam) was a sister of my grandfather. Two of her sisters, Mary Elizabeth (Sister Mary Elizabeth) and Madeleine Sophie (Sister Michele) were all assigned at one time or another to the Ursuline Academy in New Orleans. They are all buried in the mausoleum on campus.
