A-Boy-and-His-Cat._My Grandson and Caiteri

Montz, Louisiana

It has been a very hard day. The most pleasant thing I did was go to Lafreniere Park and feed the ducks, geese and swans. I stopped a while to watch the process of what is happening to the thousands of downed trees that are being collected. There are four huge stations set up where truck after truck arrives with a load picked up from neighborhoods. Huge machines put the trees into a shredder where it constantly spews out mulch. There are now four huge mountains of mulch the size of Mt. Nittany in Pennsylvania and this is only the beginning of the cleanup.
I waited in line at my post office branch for half an hour only to be told I must go to "your old post office" to collect my mail. We have not had mail delivery since August 27. I went over to my old post office which is surrounded by federal agents with guns and stood in line to give my name and address and was told to come back at noon. I went back at noon in heat 110 degrees index and stood in line for half an hour, displayed an identification and waited five minutes only to be told "there is no mail for this address-come back tomorrow." Considering the mail I get with the Live Oak Society I know I have a stack of mail 5 inches high, not to mention bills and magazines. I had already had a miserable morning so what difference did that make. Then, I went to my Metairie house and began the "mold cleanup" When I couldn't take the bleach smell anymore I went for a ride to the area of the Lake where I took restaurant photos a few months ago. The restaurants have all been swept away by the hurricane. I was immediately surrounded by National Guardsmen with rifles on their shoulders wanting to confiscate my camera.
I'm beginning to feel like the enemy in my own country. My neighbor of many years who had a stroke died this morning.
So, all in all it has been one awful day. My friends are all scattered to the winds, some are permanently relocating to other towns far away. And, we now have another hurricane to worry about.

I missed this originally. Now it hits me like a bat to the head. Your words are so personal and penetrating. I had to stop to wipe the tears from my eye as I thought about all you (plural and exhaustive) had to endure and are still enduring. GOD BLESS!

What a beautiful portrait. Peace and tranquility amidst your hectic days. From this photo, one would assume these two haven't a care in the world.

What misery! At least there were some bright spots. To have such a fine looking healthy grandson must be one of them.

knowing your love of trees, I'm sorry to read your comments. This is a beautiful image... so opposite from your commentary.

Hope things get better for you.
It's gotta be hellish living that way.

With all you are going through, somehow this image of peace and contentment, brought tears to my eyes. Life is not fair, I know that, I just get so upset when bad things happen to good people. I am, though, so happy about the swans and cygnets. That is wonderful news, and I hope the gondolier comes to SA and you follow close behind for a ride.

Coleen, my thoughts and prayers go out to your neighbors family! I am so sorry! ...And I had no idea what all you and Gayle are dealing with, as Gayle put it, "dealing with the Gestapo" just to get near a post office! Please know my prayers continue for you all! In contrast, you have captured such a lovely, relaxed and peaceful moment here!

C looks adorable. Does he know you posted this?
I'm glad the swans are fine. I know you've been worried about them.

As for the mail...don't count on it. Have you considered filing a change of address for the next little while? It will save you from having to deal with the Gestapo at the post office.

I had a hold put on my mail when I left for New Bedford and didn't have time to retreive it before the storm. All I've received since is about 10 pieces of mail. Lots of paychecks are out in limbo somewhere.

So sorry about your neighbor.

Thank you for the update, Coleen. It must be so terribly hard, and you and yours have so much courage! Thoughts and prayers are with you.
