Bewildered Birds

Lafreniere Park_Metairie,Louisiana

My photos won't be the quality I'd like for a while as I am operating with limited resources computerwise.
As soon as I was able I got back into Lafreniere Park. and took this photo, perhaps 5 days after Hurricane Katrina. As you can see the waterfowl are very bewildered. The trauma of the 15 hours of hurricane winds must have been terrible for them. So many of the egrets were hanging dead in the trees. All the people who came every day to feed these birds have evacuated the area and they are learning to fend for themselves. The black swan in center looks very poorly and I am hoping I can get some help in there today to see what we can do. The Park was one of the few places in Metairie that was intact with mainly weak trees felled. The ignorance of our public officials continue to baffle me---they have assigned Lafreniere Park as a dumping ground for all the debris that will be collected. It should have been cleaned and kept as a refuge for the thousands who go there everyday on the walking/running trails and those who just need a quiet, clean place to relax.
I am hoping the National Guardsmen stationed at the Park will listen to my plea this morning and allow some of us to go in with sacks of corn and feed and survey the birds. Granted we need to take care of the people but in the balance of nature we also need to take care of the creatures.

They look shocked. Their world as they knew it, completely changed. It seems to me that we take care of mankind by also taking care of other creatures, too.

They look sad....

I'm sure they would feel so bewildered... the apparent joy on their faces from seeing someone is there as well
Guest 17-Sep-2005 03:47
I hope you were able to feed them, Colleen.
Guest 17-Sep-2005 03:43
Some of the birds seem to be 'chatting' but most of them look bewildered ... hope you were able to help them! :)

These poor birds are lucky to have survived at all. I was so pleased to read of your political decisions. I hope everyone in the country comes to the same conclusion.

Good to have you back, Coleen. As usual you have a wonderful photo and interesting comments to go along with it. I admire your caring spirit. Hope the recovery and rebuilding process moves quickly and harmonously.

I'm relieved to see that you've found your footing; good luck with your endeavor to help the waterfowl, though.... I think it would be better if the poor things hadn't been so acclimated to human handouts.

It is so good to see you back here posting Coleen! I pray your heart and your efforts are rewarded! All need help after this devastating hurricane! These little guys do look like they need some TLC!

Well done, Coleen. The elected officials will use good people like you to the advantage of all (if they have any sense).

Nature will win out in the end, of course.

Best wishes

Great to see you back Coleen, and nice to see someone is caring for the waterfowl.

Bless you, Coleen. I'm so glad you are okay and that you see the big picture. Not to be too trite, we are all God's creatures.

With your experience you should run for election yourself...the face of humanity would then be in control !! Fight on Coleen !!

They do all seem to have the "What are we going to do now?" look about them. Just another part of Katrina's damage that hopefully won't be forgotten about, especially if they have people like you on their side.

God bless you, Coleen, I pray you are successful. The park and the animals are such a comfort to the people who are suffering and need a respite, in addition to the need to care for the animals themselves. Keep at it. I know you can do it. (That (the decision to dump in the park) really seems like a not very well thoughtout decision to me.)

They do look very bewildered and befuddled.
