Spillway Now Opened for 38 Days--Closing Some Bays 2011

Bonnet Carre' on Montz side

More than 100 of the 330 opened bays of the Spillway have been closed, though water is still seaping through the closed bays at great speed. You can tell the River is still high because of the height of the ship compared to the Spillway in the foreground. A gradual drop is better than a speedy drop to prevent "caving in" of the river banks.
Ships have to maintain a certain speed to keep the current from taking control of them and turning them sideways or pushing them into the banks.

Have there been any ship incidents during this extended period?

All that water in the river but none falling to cool you folks off. Guess that's a trade off you'll take.

Great perspective to illustrate your situation there. I think the ship might be going a little fast for conditions too. Glad things are gradually improving for everyone along the river.

Nice to see thinks are calming down a bit. Still, so much water is positively scary!

I learn something new everyday! I notice the Hale Boggs in the back! Cool! That ship is going too fast!
