Yesterday I had the opportunity to ride in the boat of PBaser A. J. Adams http://www.pbase.com/ajadams along with PBaser Scott Schexnaydre http://www.pbase.com/sschex to a rookery in the middle of a Lake in southeastern Louisiana. Scattered throughout several floating islands. "floatons", were congregations of blue herons, ibises, cattle egret, snowy egrets and great egrets with a mix of smaller birds such as kingbirds, yellow crowned night herons and redwinged blackbirds.
I had always heard of the "floating islands", but never really understand their meaning until one moved in behind us and we were suddenly surrounded by land instead of water. With careful manuevering and push-poling, the boat was once again put into water deep enough to start the motor. That was a very interesting part of the journey and a nice adventure, to be out in the middle of nowhere. Our cell phones showed four bars so we had communication should we have needed it to call the Coast Guard or another boater to rescue us.
