Oak Alley Plantation Dining Room

Vacherie, Louisiana

The beautiful piece above the table is known as a punkah and when people are seated at the table it is moved back and forth to keep insects off the table. With today's modern screens and air-conditioning the punkah is no longer needed but in the 1800's and early 1900's houses were not screened and insects roamed at will.
