Red Ohia Lehua (Metrosideros polymorpha)

A larger image of the the brilliant red flower of the Ohia Lehua.
The rarer yellow variety can be seen here: http://www.pbase.com/image/37921039
The Ohia Lehua is sacred because of its relationship with Pele, Goddess of the volcano.
Ohia Lehua are found abundantly throughout the volcano region.

Hello again Selvin. You're right! These plants are related - seehttp://library.thinkquest.org/C0114964/ohia.htm. I had been led to believe they were unique to NZ but obviously not. Thanks for sharing and also for your lovely comments about 90 Mile Beach - you really have to go there next time you head to NZ

bye for now
Helen
