Mother and Child

Silvered bronze
By Sir George Frampton (1860-1928)
English 1894-95

Gift of Meredith Frampton

Frampton was one of the leading figures in the New Sculpture movement which abandoned "conventional Venuses and namby-pandy Apollos" in favour of a vigorous naturalism, much influenced by contemporary French sculpture.
This relief, which was originally set against a copper background, shows the artist's wife and baby son. The son, the painter Meredith Frampton, gave the relief to the Museum shortly before his death in the nineties.
