A few from an unexpectedly beautiful trip to California. Unexpected in that I spent two days in Death Valley in search of a lunar eclipse . . . & didn't see the moon the entire time! Did get forty-five minutes of light; aaahhhhh, and what light! It's almost unimaginable that the dune pix here were all shot within thirty minutes of each other! Amazing colors on these desolate, sinuously curved dunes exquisite!
Unexpected in that it rained for days, with many nights of camping in the wet, while producing very little in the way of photographable light. Delicate late afternoon low tides on the coast? Not hardly with the largest swell of the winter pounding the beaches for four days. Big Sur, beautiful and blue? Not for the four wet days spent among the redwoods in the deepest depths of Pfeiffer Big Sur campground. More like 50 mph winds, horizontal rainfall and thunder like Bhagdad bomblasts! Infrared digital, overcast-lit watersheds, & persistence seeking the light that finally did come, yielded some very unexpected results.
Coastal oak groves, redwood forests, delicate waterfalls, pounding surf, ballet-like kite surfers, and coastal vistas: not what I expected, way beyond what i thought the dismal weather would allow . . . postcards from Cali, 2008. Never boring, always surprising and always beautiful.
