Finnish immigrant Eero Saarinen's design for the monument was selected in 1948 and construction was completed in 1965. When I began working in downtown St Louis in 1975, landscaping work was still underway and there were no trees on the grounds. Like a solar calendar, for a couple of days in summer, light reflecting off the stainless steel arch shone directly into my office.
