Rothko may have started out with images like these, and then worked them to diaphanous floating color abstractions. The sea washed sand here is glazed and evanescent; the shore waves glistening and frothy; and the distant wave is glassy and hobnailed. All in all, three unequal strata in compositional and color harmony -- a visual crescendo of silent imagery.
