Hi Patricia. From my limited experience of birding in the US I guess it was a Pileated Woodpecker you saw. Regards,Robert.

Today, April 25th, 2006 my husband and I were sitting at the kitchen table and I noticed a big bird on one of our trees in our back woods. I knew it was a wood-pecker as it was climbing straight up the tree trunk.I immediately looked it up in my North American bird book but it was not in the book. It then flew off into the woods and was gone out of sight. it was very large and had quite a big wing span. I believe it was this bird. But if it is a Panamainian bird how would it get here to Rochester, New York just a few miles south of Lake Ontario.?? it was very intersting...too bad it flew away before I could grab my camera. Can I be right?? . Thanks
