25 June... What the cat brought in

Murphy is an inveterate hunter. He is so determined to contribute to the housekeeping that I think I'll train him to go to Waitrose for me !! Most cats start out hunting small things like moths & butterflies before they progress to bigger prey... Murphy's first offering was a dead rat ! Which he was so VERY proud of ! Since then he's brought us a selection of frogs, mice, pigeon, blackbird... mostly alive, thankfully. This morning's offering was a slow worm. They're a protected species here in the UK (OK, I've tried telling the cats, but they don't understand !) Slow worms look superficially like snakes, but are actually legless lizards. They are completely harmless. One way to identify them is that unlike snakes, lizards (and therefore slow worms) have eyelids. For more facts on slow worms: http://www.bbc.co.uk/nature/wildfacts/factfiles/281.shtml

I enjoyed today's lesson. Thank goodness Murphy let him live.
