"Ish bin ein Bearleener"



Kennedy came up with the phrase at the last moment,
as well as the idea to say it in German.
Kennedy asked his interpreter Robert H. Lochner to translate
"I am a Berliner"
only as they walked up the stairs at the Rathaus (City Hall).
With Lochner's help, Kennedy practiced the phrase in the office of then-Mayor Willy Brandt,
and in his own hand made a cue card with
phonetic spelling.

According to an urban legend,
Kennedy allegedly made an embarrassing grammatical error by saying
"Ich bin ein Berliner"
referring to himself not as a citizen of Berlin,
but as a common pastry
Kennedy should have said
"Ich bin Berliner" to mean "I am a person from Berlin"
By adding the indefinite article ein, his statement implied he was a non-human Berliner,
thus "I am a jelly doughnut"...

Tu me fait fais rire... figure toi, que dans mon parlé du sud de l'allemagne, le souabe ... cette erreur grammaticale n'en est pas une et je m'étais jamais aperçu de celà... il y a quandmême l'ambiguité avec le beignet, mais avec mon défaut grammatical de naissance, je ne savais pas qu'en Hochdeutsch, il fallait dire ich bin Berliner...
Donc le conseiller lingusitique était certainement un compatriot du sud!

Great gallery, Jean-Luc...bringing back very many memories. Danke! I was born and raised in Berlin, left 1974.
I also attended the famous Kennedy speech (we were given time of work to see him) tremendously
popular world leader, and I heard him say "Ich bin ein Berliner". People went wild by his declaration of
solitarity with the long suffering population of the divided city. "Ich bin ein Berliner" is totally correct.
I assume the confusion stems from the other regions in Germany, where indeed a donut might be called "a Berliner", ie in Bavaria. The Bavarian "Berliners" are called Pfannkuchen in Berlin. So now you know:)))))

on peut faire ce jeu de mot mais en disant "Ich bin ein Berliner" il n'a pas commis d'erreur comme en français on peut dire " je suis parisien" ou "je suis un parisien"

Selon cette légende, la phrase correcte est « Ich bin Berliner », « Ich bin ein Berliner » ne signifiant pas « Je suis un Berlinois » (habitant de Berlin) mais « Je suis un berliner (une boule de Berlin en français, sorte de beignet) ». Cette légende a été reprise à l'époque par de nombreux médias anglophones de bonne réputation (New York Times, BBC, The Guardian, etc.). En réalité, les deux formes sont correctes, et même si la phrase « Ich bin Berliner » est bien plus fréquente, elle aurait été étrange de la part de Kennedy qui parlait au sens figuré, puisque dire « Ich bin Berliner » aurait donné l'impression qu'il se présentait comme véritablement originaire de Berlin."
par contre j'aime beaucoup la façon très phonétique que tu l'as traduit et qui rend bien la façon dont il l'a prononcé

I am smiling at this reminder of a mistake that was amusing at the time but easily overlooked in favour of the intended meaning to stand alongside an ally.

Many thanks, JL. This phrase is so well known in the U.S. in regards to JFK--as well as the story of the mispronounceation; yet we only remember the phrase as he said it. I imagine half the American tourists in Berlin, to this day, still call themselves 'jelly doughnuts'
