An orchid-rich impression of La Réunion Island

Situated about 700 kilometers from the coast of Madagascar, the Mascararene islands have a flora and fauna which is unique in the world.
From all the Mascararene islands (Rodriques, Mauritius, La Réunion and a few tiny islands)the French island of La Réunion is the largest and has the highest mountains.
For this reason La Réunion has the most diverse flora of the Mascarenes. Many species that grow on the island either grow nowhere else on the planet (endemic to La Réunion) or only occur on the Mascarene islands (endemic to the Mascarene islands)

-Species that are endemic to La Réunion island are marked with a (1).
-Species that are endemic to the Mascarenes are marked with a (2)
-Species that only occur on Madagascar and the Mascarenes are marked with (3).
-Species that also occur on other places are not marked at all.
-Species marked with a (!) are introduced plants that escaped cultivation and can form a threat to indigenous species

All pictures have been taken in the wild unless stated otherwhise. The botanical garden in which some of the pictures have been made is the Conservatoire Botanique de Mascarin ( http://flore.cbnm.org ).
