The heath dog violet (Viola canina)is a small violet that occurs on a whole range of soils.
It is best recognised by the fact that it makes no basal rosette and the leaves that are smaller and narrower than those of the quite similar Viola riviniana.
Like Viola riviniana it also has a pale spur wich often is notched at the tip. However the spur of Viola canina is usually yellowish green while the spur of Viola riviniana is white to pale blue
