Superb Starling

Jurong Birdpark, Singapore

Scientific name: Lamprotornis superbus (Rueppell, 1845). The males have a small blue spot on their beak. The females have a red spot.

The Sturnidae or "Starling Family" comprises 28 genera and between 104 and 118 species, at least three of which are extinct. The Sturnidae family is divided into two subfamilies.
One division is the Sturninae, which includes all of the species known as Mynahs or Starlings, and the other division is the Buphaginae, or Oxpeckers.

This genus is native to Africa. One of the most common and conspicuous birds in East Africa and a popular pet because it is so easily tamed. For an alternate photo, click on the thumbnail below.
