Yazd and surrounds, Iran

Surrounded by deserts, Yazd and its people have had to adapt to the elements in order to survive. The skyline of the old city is dominated by Badgirs (wind towers) to catch the slightest breeze in order to cool the occupants below. According to UNESCO, Yazd is one of the oldest towns in the world.

A centre of Zoroastrianism, it retains its own architecture, culture and cuisine. An important city on the ancient silk road, Macro Polo visited Yazd in the 13th century on his way to China.

With its conservatism and its excellent collection of historical sites, Yazd was our favourite city in Iran.
