Pasargadae

There is not a great deal for visitors to see at Pasargadae. However in my view the main reason to visit is to pay homage to one of the greatest leaders in history, Cyrus the Great.

There are many reasons to consider him so worthy of this accolade not the least of which is the founding of the Achaemenid Empire.
Cyrus appears to be the first monarch to establish what has become known as an ancient declaration of human rights, written on a cylinder (and promoted at the United Nations).
Cyrus also introduced the concept of a centralised state with strong regional autonomy (like a federation), through the concept of Satraps.
Given today's political climate it is interesting to know that Cyrus freed the Jews from slavery in Babylon and is the only none Jew referred to as a Messiah in the Bible (Isaiah 44:24, 26–45:3, 13).
Athenians adopted aspects of the Achaemenid Persian culture and politics as their own, therefore indirectly influencing to some extent the foundations of modern democracy.

The Epitaph of Cyrus, as quoted in Life of Alexander reads "I am Cyrus who won the Persians their empire. Do not therefore begrudge me this bit of earth that covers my bones."

I think the simple, unpretentious tomb of Cyrus says it all: His actions are a much greater and lasting legacy.
