Home-made UV/IR/VIS Flash

Eversince I got the UV-Nikkor; I've been eyeing high and low for a SB-140. Thus far, still no luck (though my luck changed soon after :). I took Bjorn's suggestion of adapting a SB-14 and bought a set; however still can't justify paying 200+ british pounds for the SW-5UV adapter. Tried putting a UV filter over the SB-800... non-usable results :(

But one day, as I'm browsing the Internet for the UV adapter, I found a SW-5 adapter for $1 (using keyword like "SW-5" hoping to hit "SW-5UV"), so I bought it. The initial intention is to cut a hole and glue a UV filter onto it and use that on the SB-14. But if you have use the SB-14 before, you'll know that it is not the smallest flash around :( Hmmm....

What about the Vivitar 285HV that I got it free when I bought my FM-2? I've read somewhere that this flash has a UV(-blocking) filter; perhaps this filter has a uncoated flash-head!?!? Well, since I don't use it at all, why not try adapting that? Put on a U330 UV filter (close to the FF filter used in SB-140) ... no such luck :( "Let just tear it apart!!!" says the lesser half of my brain...

First, I took out the zoom head and remove the magnifier ... and saw the yellowish filter right in front of the flash head... remove that as well... Ahh!! The Xenon tube doesn't look coated :)

Now, here's a string of coincidences :)

First I'm looking at how to adapt the filter to the flash... I realised that, with the magnifier removed from the zoom head, a 52mm thread filter will actually fit (and click) quite nicely on the zoom head!!! And I happen to have a 52mm UV, IR, and UV-blocking filter (the old L39 works better) lying around!!! What's more, the head will hold a 2x2 glass filter as well; so if you like, you can get some uncut glass and fit it to the flash.

Secondly, the SW-5 adapter actually fits onto the zoom head (and if I get the SW-5UV, it can go onto this flash as well) !!! Now, I've something to give that extra-hold and something to remove unwanted visible flash!!! Don't forget to place some aluminum foil on the underside; it will block unwanted IR/UV/VIS light.

Thirdly, if you think the SS-800 case for SB-800 is too big ... it fits like a glove with the new setup!!! On top of that, SS-800 has two inner pockets ... for 2 filters (with one attached on flash)!!!
