Many places have an icon in their skyline. In Toronto it’s the CN Tower, in Chicago it’s the Willis Tower and here in Smiths Falls it’s an old, abandoned railway bridge that reaches for the sky. At the Smiths Falls Detached Lock the unique characteristic isn’t so much anything about the locks themselves but the bascule bridge in the background. The bridge itself is a National Historic Site of Canada and once carried the Canadian Northern Railway over the canal. After the railway was abandoned in 1978 the bridge was left permanently in the up position.
