Silvery Checkerspot (Chlosyne nycteis)

I went out specifically looking for this species on this day because it was one notable gap in my collection of photos. I scarcely see them close to home - they seem to have very localized populations - so I went on a little road trip to a spot where they were consistently seen in past years and I barely got out of the car before I saw one flying around the flowers at the edge of the parking lot. I saw several more along the trails with this one in particular very fresh and content to perch (while others were busy sparring with other butterflies including crescent species).
