Chipmunk

It's mid March and it still feels like the deepest freeze of January. It's hard to believe at this time in past years butterflies were already flying. Not this year! In spite of the continued deep freeze today was the first day I saw chipmunks out and about both in my yard and in the woods. They were all looking quite slender.

This little guy looks rather surprised by all the snow! It is unusual for them to come out when so much snow and cold is about, but the days are lengthening and their internal body clock probably tells them 'enough already, time to wake up and visit the outside world'. Terrific shot.
