Arrowhead Spiketail (Cordulegaster obliqua)

This was my first encounter with a spiketail. My dragonfly book says this species is "elusive and seldom encountered anywhere in Ontario". My dragonfly book also mentions that they are "found along small, rapid, often shaded, sandy-bottomed forest streams" and that's where I found this one, though the stream wasn't rapid. This was, without a doubt, my find of the day! It came not too long after I thought to myself how surprisingly unproductive the day was turning out.

Stunning capture of this rarity!! Chris and Bob list this as rare and local for the area in their odonate checklist. Congratulations! I found one some years ago but at the time got a very poor photo and had no idea it was so rare.

Wonderful
I love the 'face' on the abdomen, and the arrows pointing down.
What a beautiful, exciting find.

This is beautiful, Chris. I have never seen one of these. Very striking and you got him very well.
