Although not very clear, this photo shows prints left behind by a Ruffed Grouse. A close look at the prints revealed what looked like teeth or frills along each toe and that along with the small size of the prints compared to the turkey prints I saw yesterday led me to believe that this was Ruffed Grouse.
A rule I usually follow when photographing anything is to always shoot in the direction of my shadow so the resulting photo is evenly lit with no harsh contrasts or bright highlights around the edges. Initially that is what I did to capture this scene, but the increasing overcast reduced the contrast enough that the resulting photo showed no detail in the prints. Needing more contrast in the scene, it then occurred to me that I should try shooting away from my shadow. This was the photo that resulted and it was the only one out of several others of the scene taken from different angles worth keeping. This trick will now go into my photography toolbox for future use. Even after 6 years I am still learning new things with the camera!
