I have recent shots of 2 different Hairy Woodpeckers in northern NJ. One looks very like this. The other is younger and the rusty chest is much more prominent. I have stumped all of my bird friends and came to your sight searching for other "Rusty Hairys." I assume you reference a subspecies is due to the rusty chest. Did you ever get any answer? LOVE your images! Sandy
